Operator has links to Norway and Kaliningrad ?
not enough people are saying Andy Yen did a Ratner and they should be
> After the speech, the value of the Ratner Group plummeted by around £500 million,
@davidgerard I dunno, I feel like Ratner Ratnering Ratner Group could have gone just as good had he followed up with "this shouldn't be a surprise"; also the original statement denigrates a product but not the people as much as Yen's "loser thinking" breakdown did.

What people understand doesn’t change facts. It’s not an antisemitic platform.
I'm giving a talk online at 13:00 Atlanta time, 18:00 UK time, about 4:45 from when I post this:
“Factoring Integers by Chasing Rabbits in Circles.”
https://www.gathering4gardner.org/news-2026-10-30/
I have no idea what hashtags I should use for this.
Anyway ... the title and abstract are on that page.
Less than 5 hours ... I should be planning what I'm going to say ...
People are upset about #proton wanting to use AI more, to cut on costs, make more profits...well, I am not at all. Anyone who trades their product/service is subject to its bad influences. Trade is the origin of most problems as I wrote in this book tromsite.com/trombooks/#flipbo…
The longer you play the Trade Game, the more chances to become a shithead. A profiteer. An ego-maniac. One who cares more about making a profit than anything else.
There is a reason why I so desperately talk about "trade trade trade" and how this is an awful game. It is indeed the origin of most of our problems. But too few are listening.
The only way around this is to create Trade-Free services. Like we provide via TROM.tf. We provide file hosting, file sharing, social platforms, video platforms, and so much more. And they are all trade-free, meaning you do not have to give us ANYTHING in order to use them. And so we have ZERO incentive to create shitty services. ZERO.
That's the way.
No "small and honest" business can stay small and honest. They have to pay employees, hardware, rents, etc.. They are entangled with you, the user, who needs to pay them else they are fucked. They need to grow, and lying is a short path to that. Cut costs, abuse their employees, hype their products, etc..
So yah, you want trade-free services? Check our directory of trade-free services and organizations directory.trade-free.org/
Rant done.

🆕 blog! “10 Years on Mastodon”
As of today, I've been on the Mastodon social network for 10 years. I think that deserves a little reflection and celebration.
Post by @Edent View on Mastodon
Social networks often launch in a blaze of glory but limp out of existence within a year or so. How many services have you signed up to,…

@Edent incredible - a full decade, congrats!
I was on quitter.se in 2017,also dabbled on app.net, but never really got into it until 2018 & mastodon.
The improvements you suggest later on would be excellent, it’s interesting to see your comments about bsky which I never used. Let’s hope your suggestions get taken up.
I also think your single-file server hack https://shkspr.mobi/blog/2024/02/activitypub-server-in-a-single-file/ is worth a mention, I learned a lot from its tricks. I’m really glad you got funding to take it further.
building community isn't easy, and many communities suck, but i think it's a necessary part of achieving a good life for all
Building pieces for the 3D printer using the 3D printer reminds me using a compiler to compile a compiler
@stefano The heating element on my veteran Antex X25 soldering iron is soldered to the mains cable, so when it failed I needed a soldering iron to fix the soldering iron.
Is X11 versus Wayland the new vi versus emacs war, or have we blown straight past it to ChatGPT versus Claude wars?
@cstross My (shortened) take:
X11 - decades of workarounds built on top of features that no one uses anymore... Mostly abandoned by its developers. Nevertheless it is what has formed user expectations over a long time.
Wayland - designed by people with a very narrow scope of interests who were then confronted with the above users, and unable to deal with the fallout, making adoption a very slow affair with constant ugly conflicts.
@toast this is why i say: Every LLM use is a missed chance to build and strengthen community

As a guide, if famously fair and balanced Fox News or the German far(t) right media outlet Nius calls anything anything, it’s probably not that. Or at the very least, it’s a convenient reduction of facts to something that fits their talking point.
Mastodon isn’t a platform in the same way Xwitter is. That’s a centralised platform, Mastodon is many independently hosted instances choosing to federate with each other. Among those instances you’ll find those tolerating asshole opinions of all kinds. And then other instances de-defederate from the collective. So labelling all of Mastodon antisemitic or anything else speaks to a lack of understanding on behalf of the person making that claim.
@liaizon Oh I didn't mean the project if that's how it came across. For something that's effectively an experiment that never really had any clear vision behind it, it still holds up surprisingly well, although every now and then I do have to consider how sustainable it is and whether I'd be able to shape it into something worth trying to be proud of.
I was referring more to the hobbies I (thought I) had in general. A lot of IT-adjacent stuff tastes like spoiled milk these days, gamemodding is apparently a solved problem now as well as most firmware shenanigans, VR has been dead for ages, a few of the communities I used to be part of have dissolved into some kind of arithmetic average of Reddit, Twitter, and YT Shorts, and it's about time I admitted that I don't really want to learn guitar.
I just need to find something new I guess. I think I'll dabble in some radio stuff, I've heard there's a small Meshtastic community around here. I also need to find myself at least some kind of physically active pastime, as good a time to touch grass as any.
@lnkr ah understood! I know your secretive about your identity of course feel free not to answer but where are you based?
When you create an activity you don't have to send it to your followers. In fact "followers" is a special stream as you said that is driven by others but you can have your own stream. A spec-respecting server should allow you to create a Friends Collection, which doesn't contain all your followers but only those you control by hand, and use that in the to so that only actors there receive your activity. You may even select your targets and put them one by one, direct message style.
But doing that would mean respecting the spec and I have no idea which servers do, if any. Mastodon certainly doesn't. I fear the real problem is that all implementations tend to follow the mastodon style of "I do what I want" rather than following the spec
@rakoo I agree about the custom distribution collections, in theory, but it not part of the spec (other than a sentence or two related to delivery).
@hzulla Cron, of course, dates back to a world in which:
- computers were a significantly smaller part of the load on the power grid
- we didn't have tightly synchronized clocks everywhere (no NTP yet)
- we didn't have architectures in which power consumption was as tightly linked to computational load
Software often outlives all sorts of assumptions!
@mattblaze @hzulla I doubt cron is a relevant part of it.
From the article: "In Ireland, for example, where data centres with large-scale battery storage systems currently account for around a fifth of the country’s electricity demand, the amplitude of the 1-minute signal quadrupled between 2016 and 2021"
🚀 Stalwart v1.0 is out: the fastest mail server on the planet, up to 234x faster than Dovecot. https://stalw.art/blog/stalwart-1-0
I #Selfhost my email server (that handles my 20+ domains) since almost 20 years now, currently on a cheap virtual machine running Linux, with 1 CPU core, 2G of RAM, 40G hard drive and unlimited network traffic which costs me less than €5/month.
Many people keep on telling me that running your own email server is more or less impossible. I simply don't listen to them.
I explained my setup in a blog series starting at https://jan.wildeboer.net/2022/08/Email-0-The-Journey-2022/
Jan Wildeboer
@jwildeboer @homelab You are so courageous!
What is your experience with ending up in spam?
Also, the economical cost is quite cheap, but how about maintenance time?
Lastly: have you considered switching to Stalwart by @stalwartlabs?
Sorry, the app encountered an unexpected error
