@davidgerard That sounds like a solid process. And reminds me that I need to a pause and emphasis pass on the next one as I rehearse 🙂
@baldur most of it is A LOT of practice really
@david_chisnall @MaddieM4 For me, this is what the UNIX world always was.about, small, replaceable, and stable tools operating on simple and interchangable data formats. But modern Linux is actively evolved towards a locked-down app store model..

Fediverse
TIL the fediverse basically DDOS's sites when you share a link.
I shared a link from NPR Tiny Desk but there was no image preview or video embed. After investigating this I learned that when you do that, each instance picks up the link and individually retrieves the link preview nearly simultaneously. For gargantuan sites like YT or Reddit, this is a trivial amount of traffic and not a problem, but for smaller sites like NPR this results in a sort of botnet DDOS attack on the site’s servers. More here. Another example here . For that reason, NPR has blocked Fediverse servers like Mastodon.
I have experienced this on my personal server as well (DDOS), but at the time didn’t know why, exactly.
This isn’t the end of the world, but certainly is not great and hurts engagement with the content. Is there a solution for this? Perhaps using some sort of webtorrent service like PeerTube where they just fetch the information from another fediverse server instead of the source server? Maybe fetching embeds client-side? At least that would stagger the requests.
@PattaFeuFeu @jakobmiksch @streetcomplete @everydoor Yes, I'm patientlywaiting for the iOS version of StreetComplete as it'll let a bunch of people take part.
@slowe @streetcomplete The latest beta has been nothing but solid for me, so I’m really looking forward to sharing the public version with loads of people!
@nina_kali_nina Linked to from https://www.unitedbsd.com/d/1708-netbsd-trouble-booting-via-usb-pen-drive-netbsd-110-amd64-usb-image here (thanks, @davidrevoy !)
The upcoming weekend is going to be our summer / winter hybrid (not enough money to afford either).
But I already downloaded NetBSD to try in VirtualBox. The installation process in the wiki looks slightly terrifying (not my first net install but there's a Windows partition that I had to accept when buying refurbished ThinkPad T480). I found a page in the wiki with ThinkPads. Should be supported.
@nina_kali_nina @davidrevoy What I struggled with was finding out which packages are available.
I don't need a full DE (GNOME and KDE were bashed for using D-BUS as that one violated UNIX philosophy…)
Fluxbox got mentioned (next to some Golem?).
It's X11. So I have to bite that bullet regarding security.
Can I have AwesomeWM? (Not found in the wiki). QTile? (Same) Mate? (Found something but situation is not clear).
@pathunstrom A couple of years ago, I was brought in as a moderator to help de-fascist a community that had practically turned into 4chan, in one of the most fundamentally-abuse-attracting and difficult-to-moderate categories of community (privacy/security-related).
The policy was set as "no fascists, no alt-right, nothing that looks like it" and people would either get banned immediately (if clearly intentionally abusive) or get a warning otherwise that they were expected to take seriously (doubling down would be grounds for a ban). Every ban was permanent but revocable if someone showed genuine reflection and commitment to do better - this sometimes took minutes, sometimes months or even longer, sometimes never.
Randos complained for months. "You just call everyone a nazi", "how do you define fascist then", "you're being unreasonable", "the alt right aren't fascists", and so on, and so forth. Without exception, the ones complaining about it the most were the ones who already had a track prior record of being an asshole in different ways. A lot of the bans were the result of brigading attempts from, well, fascists who objected to being pushed out, pretending to be 'new users' and mysteriously immediately knowing about previous bans that happened before they joined.
It took a while, but they eventually gave up. The result was a pleasant community to be in, unusually pleasant for a privacy/security community. I haven't been around there for quite a while now, but my understanding is that it's still a nice place to this day.
"No fascists allowed" works, even under the worst conditions, and the "no, seriously, this is not up for debate, the moderator decides" is a critical component of making it work.
I just found out this event is taking place near me tonight and wondering if anyone has thoughts on the best way to promote fedi at it. I'll probably go and just mumble through it.
I don’t have answers, but I think we find them by trying lots of stuff, comparing notes, and iterating on the ideas that work best.
For in-person events, I’d love to try handing out 5x8 cardstock flyers with a QR code, text and the Fediverse symbol. It’s too late to print those for tonight, but I’d be happy to help design and print some as a test.
For tonight, maybe talk to some central people about the Fediverse ability to dampen misinformation.

How can I open an omicron post in mastodon? Pasting the post link (e.g. omicron.blog/…/designing-a-vault-whose-front-door… ) into the search doesn’t work.
Hi, Omicron is only federated with article-type posts. But yes, you can do this like: fosstodon.org/…/117154469309929356
They are aviable!

A year ago or so I was thinking something like this should be made, then immediately procrastinated on the idea.
Thanks for creating it. This will be my weekend project to port everything over.

Could be because nobody on your instance is following any omicron.blog users. As I understand federation, there needs to be an existing connection for your instance to look up the other site in searches?
I could be wrong, but new/small instances are often omitted in searches.
Well that was a first for me...

Lovely.
Awesome.
@tinker I dread this timeline.
