@futurebird Spirit of Arabic: “You write vowels?"
The rule against “positive talk” about J.K. Rowling—including fanfiction—is internally consistent with Wafrn’s founding ethos, but its sweeping interpretation risks undermining the very kind of community Wafrn was built to be.
Wafrn’s original goals: a safer, Tumblr-shaped home
Wafrn did not set out to be a neutral or “anything goes” platform. Its founding identity is explicit and political:
-
“No alt-right, no nazis, no terfs.” This is stated directly in the project’s own description.
-
The developer’s own three rules are equally blunt: “1st no nazi shit 2nd no terf shit”.
-
The name itself is a joke with a point. “Wafrn” stands for “We Allow Female Representing Nipples,” a direct reference to Tumblr’s 2018 porn ban.
So the goal was never to recreate Tumblr as it is, but to build a Tumblr-like space that is actively hostile to the ideologies that make Tumblr unsafe for trans people. The admin’s warning about JKR is not a sudden departure from that mission; it is a direct enforcement of the “no terf shit” principle. The admin even framed the ban in existential terms: “you are financially helping with the fucking trans genocide”.
Why build Wafrn when Tumblr exists?
The short answer: because Tumblr, from Wafrn’s perspective, is part of the problem.
-
Tumblr is a corporation that banned adult content and, in Wafrn’s view, tolerates or platformed TERF ideology. Wafrn’s name is a protest against that moderation choice.
-
Tumblr is not federated. Wafrn’s core technical selling point is that it connects natively to both the Fediverse (Mastodon, etc.) and Bluesky, letting users curate a cross-platform social graph without being trapped in one corporate silo.
-
Wafrn promises a “caring and inviting place” with manual, volunteer moderation, not algorithmic or corporate enforcement.
The founding bet was that people who miss Tumblr’s energy also want a space where the baseline social contract is “trans people are not up for debate.” The JKR rule is the logical enforcement of that contract.
Does the action get them closer to the goal—or further away?
This is where it gets messy.
On one hand, it is aligned: If the stated goal is a space where TERF ideology and its most famous standard-bearer are not treated as normal or positive, then allowing enthusiastic posts about her work—even fanfiction—does send a mixed signal. The admin’s logic is that “positive light on her creations” is functionally positive light on her, and therefore violates the community’s foundational boundary.
On the other hand, the action risks betraying the goal in two ways:
-
It collapses “harm” into “association.” The rule does not target harassment of trans users or promotion of JKR’s politics; it targets enjoyment of a text. That is a much broader net than “no terf shit,” and it can feel like thought-policing rather than harm reduction. The admin’s own community has already been criticized as “an echo chamber” precisely because of this ban. An echo chamber is not a “caring and inviting place” for everyone; it is a place where the price of admission is agreeing with the moderation’s cultural tastes.
-
It contradicts the “chaotic Tumblr energy” pitch. Wafrn is marketed to people who miss Tumblr’s messy, self-curated, non-corporate weirdness. But the JKR rule replaces Tumblr’s corporate ban with a communal ban that is just as absolute, just as unwilling to discuss, and arguably more personal. The admin’s tone—“Go fuck yourselves” toward critics—is not the tone of a platform trying to build a big tent; it is the tone of a platform that has decided the tent is smaller and purer.
The verdict: The rule makes sense if you accept that Wafrn’s core product is not “Tumblr but federated” but “a federated space with a hard anti-TERF boundary.” Under that definition, the JKR ban is a consistent, if blunt, enforcement. But the way it is enforced—sweeping fanfiction into the ban and refusing discussion—moves Wafrn away from the “fun, chaotic, caring” community it advertises and toward a smaller, ideologically policed enclave. That may be what the admin wants. It is just not the same thing as the Tumblr-shaped haven the project’s own branding promises.

"waaaaaah wafrn mods are fascists bc they don't let me publicly endorse the work of a woman that literally uses her money to destroy trans people's lives waaaaaaah"
that's how they fucking sound from the perspective of a non-miserable person who doesn't throw a fit when they can't give attention to an obvious asshole
@dansup Great work, appreciated.
Btw: Is there any support for dates and geolocation planned for any project? So that I could geo-tag a post, and/or add a date to it. That way, people could post and find about local matters, post about 2nd hand selling, and even announce events.
@OndrejZizka Yes!
@futurebird My experience is from Canada. I don't follow American justice news, but I certainly remember the Central Park Five and how America's president campaigned to have them murdered by the state.
They were innocent and he has never apologized.
@radis_noir et voilà, Jean-Michel et Jeanne Fachot sont inscrits 😁

Also being like 'no appeal' about a warning is fucking hilarious. You're getting rapped on the knuckles and told not to do it again. You don't need to appeal that, you just need to not do it again. No one even would've known it happened if you quit crying.
@snazzypurpleman@app.wafrn.net
quoting this one because I want to have it as pinned post
@gabboman@gabboman.xyz
Tbh, it still takes a little trouble understanding what the right approach is. I was never a Harry Potter fan so in this case, I don't care, but if this happened, let's say, with Doctor Who, honestly, I wouldn't know what to do. Is my favorite show in universe
If someone told me to stop seeing Doctor Who, it would probably be impossible for me, absolutely.
But, anyway, fuck JK, and that post looks like AI so, deserved
@nube@app.wafrn.net
I did like Harry Potter when i was a child. And I understood what it is so i do what I can
@evan well, now in London I swim in the Hampstead Heath ponds, when it’s warm, and with ducks, heron, wild flowers and foliage, that’s quite the spa experience.
@wendinoakland that sounds awesome!
@gabboman@gabboman.xyz
i feel like the anti harry potter rule is completely reasonable tbh. continue to stand your ground, i might not be on flagship aside from my alt but i think you're fighting the good fight
@sunnydazed@social.dazed.party
I made that rule and people who has complained about it:
Someone who said “antisionism is antisemitism and we should bomb gaza more”, people with a history of harassing trans people, and someone who also complained about the lolicon rule
@gabboman@gabboman.xyz
i feel like that post was written with AI LMFAO
@sunnydazed@social.dazed.party
Is what the mod team said.
My opinion is that I rather just shame on harry potter, its enough
Tip of the day: you can install Catodon as if it were an app in Android (and likely its forks).
In Firefox and its forks, access Catodon, then click/tap the three dots, then "More" (the next item after the "Extensions" menu item), then choose "Add app to Home screen", then click the "Add to Home screen" button.
In Chrome and its forks, access Catodon, then click/tap the three dots, then choose "Install and create shortcut".
In both cases, it'll create a new icon in your Android app drawer, which will open Catodon in a full screen page, i.e. no address bar or toolbars, which will only appear if you access some external website from inside Catodon.
Despite an app being essentially the same thing as an open tab (as both are using a browser under the hood), installing Catodon (and any website installable as an app) makes the browser to run it in a minimal environment, which leads to an even smoother experience.
