Is anyone here familiar with coves.social? It's using a modified version of the Photon frontend, displaying Lemmy posts, and claims to use AT Protocol
We banned a spammer from this instance recently, and I went to see what instance it was coming from (in case there was more)
coves.social/community-guidelines
Coves is built on the AT Protocol, which means it’s part of a larger decentralized network. Your account and identity exist on your Personal Data Server (PDS), not on our servers. These guidelines and our moderation only apply to the official Coves AppView at coves.social. Other instances of Coves or other AT Protocol services have their own policies and moderation. If you’re banned or have content removed from our AppView, your AT Protocol identity and data on your PDS are unaffected — you can still use other services on the network.
They do credit Photon and they have released the source code for their modified frontend: coves.social/legal
I also found this on their GitHub: github.com/BrettM86/tidepool
Tidepool is a read-only ActivityPub → atproto bridge for the threadiverse. It follows Lemmy/PieFed/Mbin communities (FEP-1b12 group federation), materializes their posts, comments, and profiles as social.coves.* records in a virtual PDS it operates itself, and serves them over com.atproto.sync.* so the Coves AppView indexes fediverse communities exactly as it indexes native ones. Votes stay bridge-side as aggregates behind one sanctioned XRPC.
I think it’s neat that someone is working on this, but I’m a bit concerned that it’s read only from the threadiverse:
- They would suffer from a problem similar to what we have, when someone sets up a Reddit repost bot. Users interacting with some content while not knowing that their replies aren’t reaching the original poster
- they get content without giving content back
I’m conflicted by this idea that I just came up with, but it's a media delivery service like Netflix that is technically free, but there are ads so you can decide if you want to skip that specific ad by paying a fee (let's say $1 for every "skip").
@Alice This would mean you are paying for ads, basically.
These little guys are many more like ‘em are what we’re after. I gotta tweeze these partially-glued capacitors off the board, then desolder each one, clean up, bend the legs on the new capacitor to fit nicely on the board, solder the new capacitor in place. Check continuity. Repeat 14 times (not 19 as I thought, yey)

RE: https://mastodon.social/@jimniels/117505288844524425
I have my phone in Do Not Disturb most of the time and have disabled most notifications entirely.
I actually think the entire idea of "phone notifications" is somewhat insane. Like, why do I even want that?? I don't, really.
The number of people on the entire planet who I want to hear from ASAP if they're desperately needing to get ahold of me I can count on one hand.
The Democratic Party’s biggest names are all on the trail leading up to Election Day. Obama in Ohio and Michigan. Harris in Mississippi. Clinton in Florida. Sanders and AOC in Maine. And the early votes, forecasts and generic ballots are all pointing in one direction. Let’s keep it going! 👏 https://thinkbigpicture.substack.com/p/week-progressive-wins-october-25
Please 🙏
@990000 yeah these days I think we should treat it like a communicable disease. Hiding it from the public is not acceptable anymore when it's dangerous and potentially spreading
@FediTips@social.growyourown.services @idiot@mastodonapp.uk I think some people are used to having to crosspost on Instagram + Twitter for example, so if they have both pixelfed and mastodon they may think it's the same thing where they need to post on both separately? maybe different followers on each too

The 2020 BLM protests were hardly some small, isolated incident involving a little property damage. The unrest caused more than $2 billion in insured property losses across the United States, making it the costliest civil-disorder event in U.S. insurance history at the time. The unrest spread across more than 20 states and affected communities nationwide. Whatever your political position, pretending the damage was trivial or that this was some minor, localized event is simply ignoring the facts. That doesn’t mean every protester was violent or that every demonstration was destructive, but the scale and financial cost of the unrest were substantial.
Despite the scale of the 2020 BLM protests, the long-term results were mixed at best. They generated enormous public attention and prompted some policy changes, but they did not fundamentally transform the American political system or eliminate the racial inequalities that motivated the movement. In many respects, the country remains deeply divided, and racial hostility has become increasingly visible in our political discourse. Under the current administration, rhetoric surrounding race and immigration has only intensified those divisions. For all the protests, all the disruption, and all the money lost to property damage, the question remains: how much has actually changed for the better?
This is exactly why memes like this are counterproductive. Rather than encourage an honest discussion about what happened, what it cost, and what the consequences were, they reduce complicated events to simplistic narratives designed to provoke anger and deepen divisions. Presenting misleading information to reinforce an existing political bias is propaganda, regardless of which side does it. It is the same kind of divisive political messaging that the current administration routinely uses to mobilize its supporters and discredit its opponents. When we substitute outrage and misinformation for facts, we make meaningful discussion impossible. That is a significant part of how we arrived at our current political climate, and continuing to circulate this material without questioning its accuracy only makes the problem worse.
Anyone can break up a showing of an enemy propaganda film by putting two or three dozen large moths in a paper bag. Take the bag to the movies with you, put it on the floor in an empty section of the theater as you go in and leave it open. The moths will fly out and climb into the projector beam, so that the film will be obscured by fluttering shadows.
@simple_sabotage this is interesting in that it presupposes that it's easy to collect 20-30 large moths. It's a story from before #BiodiversityCollapse.

@protos @sun it's become worse. now, when you want to make a new account, you HAVE to send a selfie to verify that you're not a bot. they claim that photos won't be stored but it's a gross violation of privacy. just lost my alt because i refuse to play ball with this skulduggery. my main is locked for 3 months (!) for proverbially wishing "both sides kill each other"
i don't particularly fancy the prospect of ending up on some sort of palantir database that freezes your bank account when you say the wrong thing about israel.

Yeah, this: https://www.unchartedblue.com/those-democratic-fundraising-texts-you-keep-getting-theyre-scams/
I’m very clear: when I get a political text (and I get a lot of them), I “stop” it (not “end”, that’s bullshit they use to confuse you about the fact that they are legally required to stop texting from that address if you say “stop”) *and* spam-block it.
More to the point, I’m very explicit: if I’m getting texted from your campaign, I am *less* likely to give you money.
The fact that donating to Democratic campaigns is *actively punished* (by selling your phone number to these spammers) probably reduces the amount I donate by quite a bit each cycle, simply because I get so turned off by the punishment.
It’s a stupid, counter-productive own goal by the Democratic Party as a whole, and they need to start teaching campaigns to stop playing along with this idiocy…
@jducoeur According to the FCC “stop” and “end” are to be handled identically (alongside “quit,” “revoke,” “opt out,” “cancel,” or “unsubscribe”). And I *believe* these are all typically handled by the service provider, so the sender doesn’t need to cooperate. https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/2024/03/05/2024-04587/strengthening-the-ability-of-consumers-to-stop-robocalls

when the headphone jack comes back it'll be mini-xlr/2.5mm combo instead of the 3.5mm style. just to fuck with you
xlr + 1/4th in combo jacks are a thing it's weird you never see tiny xlr 1/8th inch ones
@feld murky! But I think I see why you feel strongly about it. Thanks for the explanation.

The good news is I didn’t see any capacitors actually LEAKING here, and the 3 boards were quite clean already overall.
