They put a fancy-sparkle-pen AI button in the Google Translate app and I guess we didn't press it enough, as punishment the PM in charge is now giving us the sparkle-pen on every single translation, every keystroke, whether you want it or not, whether you consent to it or not. You WILL give the PM his metrics!!! AI search results are now mandatory on something that isn't even a search app. Just, you thought wanted to translate a sentence? WRONG!! Gemini knows what sentence you want to translate‼
This hurts, this *hurts*, this hurts so bad. I dropped Google for Kagi because Google wouldn't let me turn off the Gemini results. I uninstalled the Google Maps app and now use maps only through the mobile website because it won't let you look at a business without showing an AI summary. GMail lets you turn off the AI but not the magic pen icon, so I'm switching away. But Google Translate is fundamentally hard to replace and I can't swap it out for the website because I need downloadable models.

My child is at that age (5 almost 6) when girls start experiencing a confidence gap. I would have been a proud mamma to show her the incredible diversity of presenters in our devroom at FOSDEM.
I’ve been showing her examples of other kinds of excellence (than stereotypical cis white men - sorry no offense) since she was an infant.
But it’s so much more powerful when you discuss people you know IRL and can show actual examples...

The rejection probably hurts a lot because in this new life, I feel like I have finally found my people and I am now looking forward to each edition of FOSDEM, like a homecoming 🥹
Maybe the silver lining in this is that I can turn the disappointment into a new creative project? Maybe a photo + short interview series celebrating underrepresented people in tech, who are brilliant trailblazers?
We really appreciate all your supportive messages today! Thanks! 🥲❤️
I now cannot log into my email; the auth flow goes through normally (as far as I can tell), but when my client tries to fetch the mailbox state there is an "internal server error".
I asked IT about it and they asked for a screenshot and marked the ticket as resolved, so that's going well.

@aral great post.
I am seeing signs of people throwing things at walls to see what sticks. Not much sticking yet largely because of the herds trapped in walled gardens. Open gates are confusing, I suppose. 🙃

More signs point to neo clouds and data center companies as the first major casualties of the AI bubble.
They’re borrowing billions to build data centers in anticipation of huge AI demand, but power constraints, construction delays and rising financing costs are increasingly threatening those bets.

I don't go on Reddit almost at all anymore but being blocked from content in mobile view while being able to view it in desktop view feels skeezy as hell. Why are they """protecting""" mobile users from "unreviewed content" but not desktop viewers? Also I'm trying to view a MUD subreddit, I think I'll be okay.
