@davidsaver Gmail has an off switch. You have to give up spellcheck, but there's an off switch. This has no off switch. Also, I'm switching away from GMail
New update. Google Translate is over. It is no longer willing to simply translate sentences. Every single translation you attempt it suggests a different sentence you could have translated instead. What?? Why?? Try to type English and it's constantly autosuggesting sentences for you to translate. "Writing assistant" trying to write your sentences for you, grabbing the keyboard out of your hand, no you're doing it wrong, let me write it for you, you're not writing it statistically average enough.
@mcc And on all of the apps and tools now, AI is enabled and you have to find the setting to disable it.
@kimlockhartga There is no disable.
They put a fancy-sparkle-pen AI button in the Google Translate app and I guess we didn't press it enough, as punishment the PM in charge is now giving us the sparkle-pen on every single translation, every keystroke, whether you want it or not, whether you consent to it or not. You WILL give the PM his metrics!!! AI search results are now mandatory on something that isn't even a search app. Just, you thought wanted to translate a sentence? WRONG!! Gemini knows what sentence you want to translate‼
This hurts, this *hurts*, this hurts so bad. I dropped Google for Kagi because Google wouldn't let me turn off the Gemini results. I uninstalled the Google Maps app and now use maps only through the mobile website because it won't let you look at a business without showing an AI summary. GMail lets you turn off the AI but not the magic pen icon, so I'm switching away. But Google Translate is fundamentally hard to replace and I can't swap it out for the website because I need downloadable models.
@mcc Is DeepL an option? My former Japanese colleagues recommended it and I found it good for rough confirmation of any early switch docs I attempted to translate myself…
DeepL's website is nice, maybe better than Google Translate. The Android app is… weird. Truly bizarre design. I guess they're trying to make it look like the new iPhone but I don't have one of those so it looks wildly out of place. That's not the problem! DeepL doesn't have downloadable models. What if I need to translate something underground, or inside a large building? This is not an optional feature! I need to navigate subway systems in foreign countries! Hard requirement!
@mcc Kagi’s translate is pretty good, does it not have the same integrations?
@mcc Gmail is just as bad now.
