is there something that makes this different to 17 other proposals for a new internet or is it just a case of

I find it a bit depressing that a single photo of my dog doing nothing gets way more attention on Mastodon than any of the hard work I put into making things. I should just delete my account and create one for my dog instead. 😅 Pets > People…apparently?
@mark pets > people is an equation which has been true since at least the beginning of internet
This one. It's called A Day In Port Sunlight, and I painted it en plein air last year.

To be back in Sanremo means back to work on @scambi 🤟
Feedback meeting from #ScambiFestival 2027, with @ceci here with me and @marghe, @gekkinux + therestofthegang connected from other corners of Europe 🤯

Also I just want to say I *hate* "profile images go in circles*, absolutely loathe it, it kills readability for me, I view this as an accessibility problem, I recognize things by shapes, you put a circular border on the thing and now the shape is "circle" and my poor brain has to work twice as hard to distinguish things. Entire website is just circles with colors in them. I had *so much* respect for the fact that as late as 2026 Mastodon had held out on letting us actually see the whole avatar

That second solution is what I thought of as doing as I read this. It doesn’t rely on a third party service being up. And that instance has to do that work anyway. So why not just share the results with others?

Seems like a no-brainer! They could even leave the old behavior as an option for instance admins to re-enable, but if they default it to not DDoSing, that would make a huge difference.
@mark Wait until you share the hard work your dog does!
@dimitribouniol My dog is one of the laziest dogs in existence. He prefers to play fetch while laying down. 😅
@me @pluralistic Got me to read Makers, and realize I'd read it once before long ago. Fun moments of nostalgia, and a very timely book to be reminded of.

There are two proposed solutions I have seen. I do not claim that this is exhaustive, just only limited to the proposals that I have stumbled across.
FASP - Fediverse Auxiliary Service Provider
The idea that mastodon has is to have a third-party service that does something like generate a link preview once and then share that to fediverse instances that need it. They have a whole spec they wrote up about these kinds of services that can be run to help out fediverse instances with different things like this, search, or discoverability. They call these FASPs - the repo with the spec is here.
I don’t yet know of any FASP that is live and running, so it is kind of a paper spec at the moment. I don’t do too much on the microblogging side of the fediverse though, so I very well could be wrong.
Federate link metadata and the post at the same time
This comes from an issue on PieFed’s repo. It is basically just an idea at this point, but it is a pretty basic one; have the originating instance fetch the link preview information and simply federate it out alongside the post itself.

I’m a fan of the second one. My thought is, of you trust a server enough to accept messages from it, then you should also trust it enough to let it scrape the page title, article image, etc. for you, too.
UK troops being sent to the Yemen.
Now which particular war-criminal of a 'Labour' leader does that remind you of?
@essjayjay fucking warmongers.
Is there some tool that makes a list of file marks (and the distance between them) on a tape?
A small script that loops over mt fsf 1 && mt status (with some output filtering) would probably do something like that, but somehow someone else must have done this in a more useful way already?
@galaxis If your LTO tape drive is new enough, (early) starting at gen 5, you can do tape partitioning.
German newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung titles: "Trump helps Russia to kill Ukrainians"
This is a good example of German politics and public opinion: it is cynical enough to accept that Ukraine's sacrifice is necessary to avoid a full-out war between NATO and Russia, while at the same time acknowledging that dead Ukrainians are not a good outcome, while at the same time being too timid to actually deal with the end of the US-Europe relations as they were in the past.
Unfortunately users have gotten too used to getting a billion features for free in a single central location which stays around for 10+ years. And that's simply not really feasible to finance after the investment money runs out without mass data harvesting (even then, often barely).
Users need to learn to either all pay for such services, or accept simpler services which can actually be maintained and hosted at a sustainable pace and cost.
The majority of users are entirely unwilling to do either however. So I struggle to imagine the internet healing much unless big tech companies get punished.
Discord is not yet public though, so we don't really know the details of what their revenue flow looks like.
I'm contemplating running an intro to #OpenStreetMap event in my local area. It'd be for absolute beginners. Has anyone done something like that and can give advice/tips?
@slowe You might want to have a look at https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Mapping_parties, https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Mapathon and https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Micro_Mapping_Party.
@catraxx @Dio9sys I understand, and agree with all of those points.
I also know that there are folks like us who are on self-hosted and community funded social media as opposed to Facebook/Twitter/etc because we prefer this experience over those.
This is a whole different conversation to have, but it makes me think of the idea of, "every con does this thing, so we need to do it otherwise we're 'doing it wrong'". A plurality of ideas and experiences is better than massive monoliths, IMO
@david @Dio9sys Not all furry cons are the same. Actually they very much differ, especially from country to country, even though i admit(unhappily) that the american concept of the furry con prevails at the moment for the big cons at least.
Being non-profit neither means that you skip any major idea nor that you must conform to anything.
If you are commercial, you must, however, see furries as customers. Which means you will prefer the ones with buying power and the ones most likely to look good in a video. Con prices are already absurd and that would just make it worse.
