Home server admins, what do you do to protect your server from power outages? (Semi-beginner here, eager to learn.)

I'm tired of my MySQL databases shitting themselves into oblivion, so looking for inspiration.

@rho thank you friend.

Hacking the T-Mobile Sidekick, 20 Years Too Late

｢ The Danger Hiptop, better known as the T-Mobile Sidekick, came out in 2002 with a full QWERTY keyboard, AIM and Yahoo Messenger built in, and push notifications, at a time when most phones could barely handle a text message. All of it ran on DangerOS, Danger's own Java-based operating system ｣

In case you're wondering how MAGA is handling this stunning rejection of MAGA, Ron DeSantis just delivered a speech blaming trans people for the fact that MAGA ran billions of dollars in anti-trans ads, which he says are the cause of this sweeping defeat of MAGA.

We did it, girls. We defeated MAGA. It's all our fault.

@ai6yr @_thegeoff @stepheneb @MHowell @pmonks @W6KME @cpsc_bot Right. You would notice it protruding (and your pick or handle becoming wobbly) looong before it would have actually cleared all the threads.

Related: I suspect most folks don't understand how conversant most serious climbers (especially rescue climbers, but really all of the serious ones) are in engineering, math, systems. My MR team did a five-day course from "Rigging for Rescue" that was 75% math: how many kN are involved in a 75kg climber taking a whipper on a 1-meter Dyneema daisy chain? How much force is transmitted to the spine and kidneys by the 2" belt of the climbing harness at the end, and what does that do to the human body? At what point is the angle between two anchors too obtuse? How much should a given highline system sag to avoid the load on each anchor approaching infinity (as it does when a perfectly tight rope is deflected even slightly)? What are the failure strengths of every single piece of gear in a given rigging system? How much mechanical advantage is converted by each of a wild variety of complex and compound pulley systems? Add in the scientific knowledge needed to perform a truly competent avalanche assessment, the amount of medical knowledge conveyed in a ten-day Wilderness First Responder course, all the hours spent waiting out storms in tents while reading that year's Accidents in North American Mountaineering case studies aloud to each other (freaking out at the errors we too could have made, and laughing at the idiots who brought disaster on themselves), etc., and basically the mountains are full of surprisingly sophisticated engineers and scientists.

Which is why I cannot grok how the fzck that nut and bolt wound up in that ice tool. It's not the *culture*!

@leiawelsh yes actually! I had a lovely time

@mez For smaller VM pools I tend to use native Qemu/KVM, host passthrough mode, each guest on a local bridge network, reached over SSH with host-local pubkey auth, shell scripts for management. Locked down Debian GNU/Linux host. FreeBSD with bhyve is really nice too.

@moira are you calling me dumb?

@chartier Worst. Smoothie. EVER.

Occasionally I post on the internet looking to hire an artist for a commissioned work. Today is such a day.

1. This is an old ad (allegedly, anyway, it pops up all over the internet but I have an incredibly high res scan of it)

2. I would like to change the bottle seen in that ad to a bottle bearing this label (and add the fleur embellishment and so forth, etc)

This is more than a mere photoshop job, which is something that I could do myself. I'm looking to of course match the overall antique look and feel of the original ad. So whether that's some digital painting or someone who's WAY into filtering and processing, we shall see.

Hit me up with your rates and turnaround time if you're interested.

@davidrevoy Do I have to disable password-login for the user ('*') to enable this? Couldn't reproduce on some older OpenWRT boxes. 🤔

News: Jon Stewart Calls for Chuck Schumer Ouster After Blue Wave: ‘Bulls–t System and It Needs to Go’ | The Wrap

Jon Stewart is urging Democrats to remove Chuck Schumer and other senior leaders to make way for new voices

...one of the first things Democrats should do following their wins on Election Night is remove much of the party's senior leadership and start fresh. That starts with Schumer, who... does not deserve as much credit as he's been seeing for the wins.

@daringfireball I always thought this is what the now defunct Clips should have been doing. Provide a simple, fun editor for content creators to then distribute on their platform of choice... Like BBEdit for video‽

I'll start rewatching the movie before the 5th is over here. I was busy, ok?

@lightweight Thank you for sharing this Dave. Would like to see more so please share links when you get them.
Just reading a paper by Mohan Datta and I note that HATE is the main weapon the radical right has. Nutralise that and we nutralise them. That would explain the war on empathy. (And in turn Ardern.)
So logically, responding back to these people with compassion is the way to disarm them.
