Microsoft offers 60,000 employees a voluntary exit 😱 The AI affecting is real in IT sector. This is company’s efforts to cut costs amid AI adoption, per Bloomberg. Personnel on select teams in the US, Canada, India, and the UK at a vice president level and below will be eligible. This reflects ~27% of Microsoft's total workforce https://blogs.microsoft.com/blog/2026/10/26/introducing-a-voluntary-exit-offer/
@nixCraft If i understand this whole layoff stuff correctly (from big tech in general) they are shifting priorities (canceling projects etc…) towards building datacenters and LLM development rather than just straight out replacing people with AI.
So the layoffs are just there to free some more budget for datacenters.
Continuing to develop their exisiting software doesn’t seem to get the shareholders excited i guess.

I didn't expect so many answers to literally sound like people trying to talk away an addiction problem. This is grim.
Alcoholic in recovery here - I agree with you, completely.
Here's a sweet little teaser video showcasing another track on the album I'm releasing with CommsBreakdown on Friday. This one is called 'Al Fresco' and it's nice and mellow with chilled piano and some laid-back live guitar textures.
I took this sunset video at the park by my home & Steve added the dreamy visual effects to make it feel like a painting. Lovely! Does anyone from #Vancouver recognize this view?

In comments at a private police conference, Garrett Langley also said his wife advised him to never apologize.

@404mediaco Ah, the Roy Cohn approach.

Fediverse
this has nothing to do with the fediverse
Fediverse have a lot more features.
I opened once bluesky - it has no privacy features, I did not find any, my impression was everything is open, broadcasted globally.
For comparison, mastodon settings is full of privacy toggles. @Bonfire even have circles and extra permissions, with coming encryption, and account data migration, and groups etc.
And made by the people, not entshitified, as mentioned above, which is also very important. Also truly decentralized, has local community feel.
But Bluesky have other advantages:
1) Money
2) Focused team.
3) Stronger momentum.
4) It is larger network, because people like centralized platforms and flock in there.
5) Governments usually like big business, so such approach might be attractive too.
6) I just researched, it is also evolving protocol. They plan privacy features called "Atproto Spaces", and „groups“ in the future https://atproto.com/blog
If I would be government, I might use ATProto, but since I am not government, I may suggest NL government to invest and promote fediverse, so to strengthen it. Maybe investigate bonfire, because it is very innovative full of features,
and finance forgejo federation (as you already use it, except it would cost a lot and take time) @forgefed
Forgejo (and project management) federation would be amazing.
Expected hold time with a bank, about 50 minutes for something pretty basic but can't be accomplished online.
I seem to have a memory of my Dad not only being bale to actually talk to someone at his branch but also being able to call the branch manager and having a first name basis conversation.
Might've been a fever dream...
Anyone else laughing at the folks who voted GOP who are having an existential crisis because they got what they voted for?
@BlackAzizAnansi
Schadenfreude is particularly tempting sin. Never does a bit of good to a soul that invites it in, so I push it away with both hands.
@GuitarSith @ambergrey @geoffduncan @NigelTufnel Yes to the foot shooting.
I could stick with my current OS version on the Mac Mini and keep it off the internet. But I think I'm better served in the long term flashing Linux, which apparently is now straightforward with the T2 chips if you turn off a security setting.
I figure those 64GB RAM will be just as performant with a Linux real time kernel.
In the last few weeks i've been bombarded with emails from people who have minor tech support problems. ChatGPT is telling them to email me, writing their emails, and compiling "evidence packets" after convincing them they have stumbled on a major story:
@doktorzjivago N* drinken.
@jajo Jan! 😄

Reddit's r/opensource bans AI slop, and quite a few humans for good measure
Meanwhile on reddit.
Honestly kind of sounds like lemmy.world mods like Jordan Lund tho…
To get a project featured on the subreddit, developers now need to show it has been actively maintained for at least a year, has an established community, and has at least three contributors, give or take. Student projects such as note-taking apps and PDF viewers aren’t welcome either, and developers can no longer use the subreddit to find people willing to help maintain their software.
That creates a chicken-and-egg problem for independent developers, who apparently need an established community before they can use an open source forum to find one. Even projects with no AI involvement could fall foul of the rules. One Reddit user pointed out that their nine-year-old project, which has more than 300 GitHub stars and dozens of resolved issues, would no longer qualify because they’re its sole contributor.
The moderator also imposed a minimum Reddit account age of one year and requires significant prior contributions. Anyone who attempts to post and then contacts the moderators seeking an exception risks being permanently banned and muted.

why do people draw vaginas on characters with no legs like snake ladies and mermaids as if they're tiny external butts hanging off the front of the body
do they find that hot
it looks like someone's completely colorless dick has fallen out of their pants
yesterday at the gym I saw guy wearing a shirt that said "we HRT you" and I thought well the intended reading of that must be "we heart you" not "we hurt you" and of course "HRT" stands for "hormone replacement therapy" but then he turned around and the back of the shirt said "hudson river trading"
@dthompson I laughed out loud
because then they could build datacenters that use "zero water" at the actual facility and don't even have a connection to the utility system, but still use so much electricity and produce so much heat, that the 7 mile radius surrounding them goes up by 20 degrees fahrenheit, which causes local water usage by people and agriculture to go up, which causes local rivers and lakes to dry up
Forcément, si on laisse traîner ce genre de statue dans une cathédrale, comment expliquer aux adolescents que non, Jesus n’avait pas de smartphone 2000 ans plus tôt ?
