I’d love to have an alternative to fb marketplace but nothing seems to be as user-friendly to get people using it. I would love to eventually start a server if it is doable for a semi-capable person.

@z428 indeed. There's an onslaught of all kinds of different initiatives. I think most momentum is in ATProto-related ones, which have lobby groups doing the PR and marketing dance that is also part of a proper technology adoption process (if widespread adoption is the goal). Fediverse/AP is lacking here (though Mastodon adoption is on track).

AFAIK this European Social initiative is an attempt to bring more unison as an overarching initiative. It mentions specifically including fediverse, atmosphere, and private messenger protocols like Matrix and XMPP.

After all it is not really about the tech, which is just an enabler. Enabling technologies are the implementation details. It is about the social space they span up, where people and organizations find their own home online to engage in rich social networking activities, communication and cocreation.
