I don't think open source and AI are inherently incompatible. Of course the way AI became a thing was literally via stolen IP but at this point, we cannot deny it's existent and usage. People can respectfully raise PRs in a manageable chunk of work. The problem right now is dealing with the volume. This is a project management problem, not an ethical one at this point imo. Probably controversial to some
On today's agenda...

@Mrfunkedude Credit where credit is due, very considerate of you to not schedule farting during Bake Off. 👍
Mastodon doesn't allow an image on a poll apparently but pleroma does so now lightfe supports that if you're using a real fediverse server.
“In a sex-segregated era when women and men spent much of their time in separate spaces, the Astor House Ladies’ Ordinary provided the rare place where a sit-down meal could be had for a solo female traveler, a group of women friends, or a mixed-gender party.
“This 1843 breakfast menu speaks to 19th century New York’s same-sex dining culture. The offerings probably weren’t much different than the menu in the men’s dining room. But if you were an upper-class women in search of a morning meal, here’s what you could order.
“Options abound, with an emphasis on meat and seafood—like boiled mutton, boiled tongue, and the mysterious ‘small birds, Italian style.’”
For Brazilians looking for an out from Meta social networks, you can have Brazil centered mastodon instances. I could find 1 instance on https://joinmastodon.org/servers that was on open registration:
https://organica.social/
Otherwise, with filtered registration:
It doesn't even stop at mastodon, there is pixelfed for photo centric content, loops video for the more tiktok vibe, bandwagon for music artists, etc.
Apart from that, welcome to the fediverse!
My report on the hotel opening—for Fox News of all places:
(We were all so young!)
And this quote aged beautifully—
“'Today's a metaphor for what we can accomplish in this country,' Trump said."
See what Trump has accomplished since—
namely making $1.4 billion off crypto last year, while buyers are down an estimated $4.8 billion.

@nat my first serious software job, and the one that turned me into an actually effective programmer and wrangler of programmers, was about the status of widgets and their constituent sub-widgets in the most literal and direct way possible. we wrote stuff to manage them from pieces coming in the door, through an assembly process, to pieces going out the door as products on a website.
there were hard technical problems! (...but most of them were about keeping records.)
@nat there were a lot of ways i didn't know wtf i was doing with that, but it was gratifying to talk recently to an old coworker from that time who told me how much he missed the stuff we built, now that he's out in the world using big expensive megacorp products to do the same kinds of thing. there's a lot i miss about the direct utility and groundedness of that kind of work.

Kristoffer Lislegaard // Allostasis watch party
Allostasis watch party
08.11.2026
20:00 CET
20.11 Kristoffer Lislegaard is releasing his new album Allostasis. We start the party early with this watch party where we will watch and listen to the album with a couple of alternative tracks and talk a little bit about the new album. Not to be missed!
It is all happening over at Lislegaard.stream of course, and if you want to get pinged when we go live you can sign up here or follow @live@lislegaard.stream in the Fediverse.
See you in the chat!
About the album
As part of dealing with burnout and the stress of the world, I decided I needed to log off for a bit. So to compose Allostasis, I spent a year working without a computer in the studio. Instead, I used modular synths and hardware, recording onto an old Tascam 238 cassette recorder.
After a year of recording, I selected the strongest material and spent four months listening, organizing, and reworking the sounds.
The first three tracks, which make up side A, are collages of different parts, melodies, textures, and loops from my big pile of cassette recordings. Side B presents two unaltered live recordings straight from tape.
@rolle like seriously, it saves everyone so much time and energy if you don't like or agree with someone to the point it gets on your last nerve to see their stuff....block them lol it's not that hard.
Slop or not?

None of the substantive code was written by AI.
I used AI to help with the mechanical parts of porting (e.g. translating autotools to CMake, replacing ioctl calls with tcgetwinsize, translating the C structs into Rust), as well as to write some of the smoke tests (e.g. cairo-test, mesa-test).
Where Claude really shines though is in reviewing your own commits. You give it a hash, and it tells you about the silly memory leak or deadlock that you left in, before you can make a fool of yourself.
Blurry lines.
@thomholwerda cmake scripts are still code, so for me yes.
But my biggest issue is the dependecy on these obscure and paid tools, the antithesis of open source in my opinion.
PHP Attacks Update: As others, we have been observing a lot of AI slop PHP attempts against our honeypot sensors the last week, but so far no confirmed exploitation.
We have also refrained from CVE-2026-109618/619 tagging in scans, due to lack of reliable, safe large scale methods.
Instead we have opted for reporting out End of Life instances, which is hopefully the more actionable approach at this stage. We added 'eol-php' to the Vulnerable HTTP reporting. Tagging is based on: https://endoflife.date/php (anything older than 8.2)
You can track unique IPs running EOL PHP (not hostnames) at https://dashboard.shadowserver.org/statistics/combined/tree/?date_range=1&source=http_vulnerable&source=http_vulnerable6&tag=eol-php%2B&data_set=count&scale=log&auto_update=on
Make sure to update those systems!

@sitnik_en It's a bit misleading to call Node's permission model a sandbox. The documentation explicitly says that "it does not provide security guarantees in the presence of malicious code".
@sorin honestly, I do not really like the tradition of security promises when it is 90% but not 100% solution.
For instance, often people tell that Docker is not a sandbox. It is true that it is not 100% protection, but don't have Dev Container is big security downgrade.
Here we have the same 90% sandbox. Those 10% should not be a reason to not use it. And our wording should explain that it is almost sandbox (I think my wording is correct since I do not promise absolute protection).

@grepe indeed, it's really disturbing. That said, Marissa Mayer has been failing upward for over a decade now, ouf.
@aesthr no, on the contrary, I learn new things. It is a tool. I think people said the same when other technologies were invented (eg. internet, smartphone).
@Thales_Curiosities except it's not "just a tool" https://estherweidauer.com/articles/why-resist-generative-ai.html#its-just-a-tool
@alisynthesis My grandfather would say, “You should eat an apple.” That usually stopped most people dead in their tracks.
@soundclamp haha, I love that!
