TIL that the origin of the phrase "lame duck" comes from stockbrokers unable to pay their debts. The term means a stockbroker or speculator who could not pay off debts and had to waddle away from the market in disgrace. In America, it means politicians with limited time and term in office left.

At Repair Cafe today:

I repaired one of the Village Hall folding tables.

Then diagnosed a 30+ year old food processor as too far broken. I used a borescope to look inside at the broken parts.

Next was a cordless jetwash. It was already dismantled, but I found it was just a very dead battery.

There was a 60 year old push along horse on wheels. I helped repair the broken reins using Chicago screws in place of the decorative rivets.

I've been invited to speak at a *very* prestigious school. But their policy is to provide dinner and standard class rail fare to a reasonably close city ... and no fee.

Should I accept?

It is a *very* prestigious school, and I could do it for exposure and the CV. But as @virtuosew points out ...

People die of exposure.

So ... should I accept? Or should I say that my policy, now that I'm reasonably established, is not to give unpaid talks to well-funded institutions.

I've often suspected that auto-complete was used as a subtle/shadow form of semi-censorship, and now comes evidence from the auto-complete function on the Apple iPhone that confirms exactly that suspicion... anyone who thinks this issue is limited to Apple, has not been paying attention to the politics & behaviour of Big Tech.
