Having just been through the desert carrying a guy with no name, it felt good to get out of the rain.
@woozle An annotated version of "Das Kapital" is a great Christmas gift 💖
@kookie oooh...
(I'd feel obligated to read it myself first, though, and... I have pretty much zero time for serious reading these days. le sad)

I forgot what the album was called for a sec and got really surprised by this link.
@misty Download Suspended would be a good name for an album too
If you follow musicians this has probably come up already but remember today is Bandcamp Friday. That means if you buy from Bandcamp in the next six hours the artists get more money because Bandcamp waives their "cut". Link tangentially related
I love "shell2shell".
CVE 11 exploit:
if you have a root shell... you have a root shell. this is more than a tautology, this is a fundamental observation. you're not just a computer user anymore... you're a systems administrator. you alone can unlock the spiral and meet the goblins, use this power wisely

How private do you consider your votes in the Threadiverse?
From the technical side anyone can spin up their own Lemmy instance and view all votes, but I'm curious at what the community's perspective on how "private" that is. I think Mbin already shows upvoters? Piefed allows anonymous voting. I also know there are sites which show all voting history, but assuming those are fairly disliked.
My general questions to the community: - Do you expect your votes to be private, or just not shown in the UI? - Would per-voter votes showing up on another aggregator platform bother you, even though your instance already shares them with other servers?
For context I'm the dev doing some two way bridge interop between atproto + Threadiverse, in atproto the votes/likes are generally publicly accessible, you just look at the users repo through something like pdsls.dev, they're readable and archivable by anyone. In my opinion this isn't that big of a problem since it's fairly hard to look at and discern (Ex all my votes: https://pdsls.dev/at://did:plc:lmdkqemqrqnfiix72pyjhfey/social.coves.feed.vote). Ultimately trying to figure out if there's already a mutual understanding that they are public and we can just mirror them or whether they should stay hidden as an aggregate.
Lemvotes shows votes. So, it’s not private.

I like it when an editor or author sneaks one past the suits with a headline that most people won’t think twice about.

@siracusa I’ve heard the sound of “Age of consent” in my head the moment I’ve seen the picture;)

your morning jacket??!
@mattblaze yet another difference in voting procedures between states and counties. Been a poll worker for several years and here there is nothing more for the voter to do after we accept their provisional ballot.
@dexter Yes, but in every state if there’s a dispute about a voter’s eligibility or identity, they can cast a provisional ballot and then go to a judge to make their case. That’s codified in HAVA.

It is important to make distinctions:
- as politicians they can use and campaign in whatever platform they want.
- As Government officials, they must be forced by legislation to use a Government Federated instance so everyone has access to their communication and no Big Tech oligarch has the power to decide how these messages reach the population.
@ajroach42 you had me at Megas XLR theme song.

@evan just a specific for example, i could easily see dems going for id requirements "to protect kids"

@benbrown That's an excellent example!
@CommonSparrow Yes, with the right attachment. But it's fiddly... it won't do it on stretchy fabric for sure.
@ai6yr @CommonSparrow you can do it on stretchy fabric if you interface it (like, the whole shirt placket or whatever) with iron-on interfacing that stabilizes it. but it's not often that you need to make buttonholes in stretchy fabrics.
