How would you explain the mandelbrot set to a sixth grade student who is trying to distract you from teaching your substitute lesson on solving linear equations?
(I swear to god these kids pass around lists of which topics distract which teachers most easily. They know the ants won't work, it's too obvious. But this was a good one.)
Said student also has some peers convinced that the mandelbrot set will "eat you" and I haven't done much to clear up this rumor.

If you have a function, you can take the output of it and feed it back in. This is called iteration. If you keep doing this, one of three things will happen: it'll head off to infinity, or it'll get closer and closer to one point, or it'll just bounce around within a range of values forever. We call these attractors. There's a simple formula, f(z)=z^2+c, where the z and c are what's called complex numbers. You can pick a value of c and iterate this formula. 1/2

Why do people bother reading Anthropic’s marketing blogspam? Have you read the leaked Claude source code? Have you seen how they try to cover up their embarrassing security track record and play it like their models are super intelligent proto-gods? Do you not realize that there is some level of incompetence at play here?
Also… read third party sources man. These “AI-Native SDLC Guides” they publish are marketing. They’re selling the dream of firing workers so managers can make bigger bonuses.

We shouldn’t be forced to use toxic platforms that track and profile us in order to get public information.
Platforms such as Facebook, Instagram and YouTube track and profile their users so that they can target advertising towards them.
Their business models fuel online harms by pushing more and more extreme content to users. Despite this, these platforms are one of the primary ways that government departments share public information.
Tell your MP to support the EDM calling on the UK Government to ensure that all public sector social media content is published on open, decentralised and federated platforms!

Do you buy music, or only stream? How many albums* do you buy** each year?
If you feel inclined to boost for reach, I would be grateful.
* Album format can be digital downloads, CDs, vinyl, cassettes, or whatever. Important thing is buying the music in some format to keep/collect vs. just paying a streaming service and relying on it to preserve your music collection.
Feel free to comment if you buy music, but only singles, etc.
** Torrenting or other means of grabbing music without paying doesn't count.
@jzb I tend to buy a single album per year (typically in CD form + digital download if they offer it). That's more a function, I guess, of what bands I listen to right now that are publishing new work versus listening to older stuff.

think you might have pests in your attic? cut away a small square of the ceiling below, and wait until it's dark. if you can see a red light flickering through the gap in the floorboards, then it's almost certainly mice. the light comes from the optical sensor which is on the underside of the mouse
@jk You know, there used to be a time where mice had balls on the underside instead of optical sensors. You had to clean them regularly as well in order to keep them rolling smooth. =)
