I'm writing this from my new GNOME-running #OpenBSD laptop. Everything works so well.
I can't remember if I ever ran #GNOME before in OpenBSD. I might have done it briefly a number of years ago.
Given the touchpad issue in #NetBSD where my cursor was jumping all over the place, highlighting and deleting text at random, in OpenBSD touchpad tapping is off by default.
I turned it on with wsconsctl and am testing how well I can type with it.
So far it's a lot less sensitive (in a good way).

Mental health! First things first: I've been struggling with it. I'd be a machine if I hadn't. I've also had plenty of trouble accepting or admitting it. I don't think I'm the most toxic of the men around, but it doesn't mean I'm not affected by the culture I live in.
How am I doing now? Better. I went to therapy, I've been going for half a year now. It has helped some. Also, the people around me. And the quality of life getting better.
I'm doing good. Not everyone is as lucky. 😌 Talk, guys!
Thank you for sharing your experience, @tiarAnon!
It's great that you are getting support, and even better that you are encouraging others to do the same! 💜

Did anybody notice the Anthropic article the other day chatting bollocks about instruction-level formal verification of FOSS libraries?
I notice that one of the target libs was `simdjson`. Their compilation target was riscv64gc, an instruction set that does not even support SIMD. So, their 'formal verification' skips basically all of the useful functionality provided by the library.
Yes, that's right, they spent (presumably?) millions of dollars of tokens proving the memory safety of a fallback JSON parser that was already written in Rust.
I'm so fucking tired of this stupid crap that falls apart under the most basic of scrutiny. A $1.5 Tn company, apparently, and they can't even be bothered to check that their publications make sense at the most basic level.

The age of performative (derogatory) computation be upon us! A flash of the lights, a seemingly deep analysis. All information is a product now. Reasoning is sold in small cubes, with deli meat quality. Vendors trade these facts like if they were gods. They are not concerned with doing things right (in any sense). They did the thing, so it can be marketed for more money to do the thing again until the whole world collapses.
This non time change has been super fun. All the things that I normally need to adjust like the microwave and stove are right and all the things that normally adjust themselves like my car and my phone and various other smart devices are wrong. 🙃

Holy shit.
This guy takes a couple of minutes of audio from a security camera anywhere in the US, with no clues from the video whatsoever, and finds the exact spot where it was recorded.
How?
By correlating the Doppler curve sounds from two almost inaudible planes passing by with public ADS-B flight data.

I think this is the #OSINT video of the year.
I discovered a sound that leaks your exact location (and it's everywhere)

Haha noice. I saw some similar exploits about base freauencies of high voltage power lines working to trace phone calls
As is often the case, the take that is steering me in the right direction after feeling sad about all this is coming from @mcc

Once again Israel is at the forefront of politics, as Netanyahu appears to simply not accept the election results.
It'll be interesting to see what happens in the US today and again in two years.
Write down the arguments he uses because they'll appear on the exam later:
- The votes were rigged
- The people who voted weren't really citizens
- It would be a "disaster for the country" if they got into power
- You might personally be at risk if we let them win

okay, this is actually really fascinating in my opinion
and by these analogies between musical genres and political systems, you kinda see what they're like in a more "pure" environment, not constrained by geopolitics
democracies (rock) get everyone really passionate and invested in the results, but can lead to people being disappointed if they are constantly in the minority -- with both musical and political examples aplenty
autocracies (classical and pop music) can theoretically achieve greatness that would be hard to do in a democratic manner -- just think about those people back in the soviet union who had no problem with surrendering their rights if it means building the BAM or being part of some other big project, and treated "liberals" and "democrats" like weirdos and/or wreckers
anarchies (jazz) solve some of these problems and allow for much more fluid participation, but require everyone to be skilled in inter-group communication, to be able to either support or counter-play others live in a way that other systems simply don't do
the big difference is that people usually choose their genre voluntarily, and can switch to performing in another relatively easily -- so a classical orchestra isn't just an autocracy, but one that's populated largely by people who are okay with that
whereas in the real world, if you're born in an autocratic state, the possibility of moving to a democratic one (let alone an anarchist society, of which there are currently none) is extremely difficult and, due to different education systems, cultural norms, etc., will leave you extremely disadvantaged
which is why we are typically so insistent that governments should be democratic -- not because democracy is inherently better, but because an autocratic government can functionally trap its citizens without the ability to express themselves or move elsewhere
(also, music bands don't go to war with one another, don't seek to undermine each other economically or scientifically, don't run propaganda treating each other's genre as a fundamental threat to its own existence, and so on)

Nice, support for RTL8159 10GbE USB3 chips was mainlined in Kernel 7.2.
Unfortunately, building the firmware file still requires silly hackery.

I'm reading about a Word "clone", apparently made by the same people who recreated "clones" of Adobe's software suite.
I don't know how legal any of this is, and I'm not going to get into that. But I can't help smiling at the reactions.
When they started pushing AI, they told us we would lose our jobs, whether we liked it or not. That AI would replace us, whether we liked it or not.
Now that someone has decided to apply the very same principle to their products, suddenly they don't like it anymore.
"You can create new games, but you can't recreate existing ones."
Hurts, doesn't it?
And that's the point. The problem isn't the technology itself, but the way certain sharks use it at other people's expense. When they're the ones on the receiving end, and only then, ethics suddenly becomes a concern again.
