Even more broadly, the use of LLMs erodes trust in human beings. Not only do I trust Enthusiasts less to build software thoughtfully, my trust in any random person has been degraded if I don't know for sure whether they are given to slop or not.
Any new library I get a whiff of nowadays has to pass through a squinting phase where I try to determine if it's been made by the Unreliability Machine or if it's currently in the process of being made less reliable by same.
🆕 blog! “10 Years on Mastodon”
As of today, I've been on the Mastodon social network for 10 years. I think that deserves a little reflection and celebration.
Post by @Edent View on Mastodon
Social networks often launch in a blaze of glory but limp out of existence within a year or so. How many services have you signed up to,…

@cohanf Every-day-life in France. Also therefore, the masses are on the streets. Public services have become a desaster.

Okay. So I usually don't really reload the tab immediately when there's a Mastodon update. In part because I expect there's some UX thingy that will be rolled back within a day or two.
If you're on .social I guess you get what I'm getting at. Because wow!
This latest change gives the impression that _everything_ has moved to the wrong place (and somehow it breaks the dark mode?!).

The strangest thing is they've put a step between posting, by having a CTA (button) popping out the New post entry field into a floater (derogatory).
I guess it's because they wanted to make space for under utilized functions like the Custom Feeds and Followed Hashtags, but it's just weird (also derogatory) when they've created a whole new piece of real estate on the right hand side just to have a single search bar there.

V Bulharsku jsou sečteny všechny hlasy z druhého kola prezidentských voleb. Zvítězila dosavadní bulharská prezidentka Ilijana Jotovová, získala přes 57,5 % hlasů.
I had to cancel (I was ill) a *very* important/urgent appointment I’d been waiting half a year for; now I’ve got a new one … in March 2027. At least there might not be any snow by then. And it's less than 6 months!
Those little pleasures in #DouceFrance ... 🙄 😭

@dgar 👋
@rakoo The Mastodon criticism is popular, but I don't agree with it. The AP spec is not complete or well-specified. Mastodon did what was necessary to create a usable Fediverse protocol, despite the huge gaps in AP (noting that the Fedi client side, in practice, has never been ActivityPub). Other implementations adopted the Fedi/Mastodon protocol because that's what worked and they wanted to federate (interoperate). That's why we have millions of users on the network now. 👍
I agree. Mastodon did what was necessary to implement their particular application, that involves Microblogging. "I do what I want" is what any project should do to model for their own business or application domain. The only problem / challenge is that a lot of guidance and rigor in the ActivityPub specification and surrounding developer ecosystem is missing, to ensure decent levels of interoperability with other fediverse solutions.
lots of people want non-flat web and app designs back, way fewer people want to painstakingly draw pixel-perfect borders and bevels and textures for as many different screen DPI settings as currently exist
like, i'm not here to say that the people who want these designs are aesthetically or morally wrong, but there is a reason flat designs came about at the same time after apple introduced the "retina" display on their devices, and especially after everyone else started making displays with all sorts of resolutions that aren't strict multiples of 72 or 96 DPI
all those nicely-drawn visual styles windows xp and vista was famous for? only support three settings: 96, 120 and 144 DPI, and even then it was more of an accessibility setting
the reason why windows 9x had freely scalable window elements? microsoft realized that they had a font hinting engine that was really good at making properly pixelated versions of vector shapes and so made the most important ones into a font -- and even then, it only worked because these early designs either used plain gradients (like the title bars on windows) or 4 shades of gray
