When I was a kid, you could go to Family Dollar, or really any of the Dollar Stores (but especially Family Dollar), or Big Lots, or even department stores or whatever and get some Generic toys.

These weren't bootlegs or knockoffs exactly, but toys that were clearly designed to capitalize on the popularity of certain toys.

You could get fake GI Joe (Lanard's The Corps. and SpaceCorps. lines) or weird not-pokemon pocket monsters that were often just left over sculpts from previous MUSCLE or Monster in my Pocket tie ins, but produced in the soft PVC style of the pokemon toys of the day.

And then some of them were just "Robot" and "Alien" or whatever.

To get a project featured on the subreddit, developers now need to show it has been actively maintained for at least a year, has an established community, and has at least three contributors, give or take. Student projects such as note-taking apps and PDF viewers aren’t welcome either, and developers can no longer use the subreddit to find people willing to help maintain their software.

That creates a chicken-and-egg problem for independent developers, who apparently need an established community before they can use an open source forum to find one. Even projects with no AI involvement could fall foul of the rules. One Reddit user pointed out that their nine-year-old project, which has more than 300 GitHub stars and dozens of resolved issues, would no longer qualify because they’re its sole contributor.

The moderator also imposed a minimum Reddit account age of one year and requires significant prior contributions. Anyone who attempts to post and then contacts the moderators seeking an exception risks being permanently banned and muted.

My heart is heavy. Walter Koenig, our Ensign Pavel Chekov, passed away early today.

Walter and I met on the bridge of the Enterprise in the 1960s, and we stayed friends for nearly six decades. When Brad and I married in 2008, Walter stood beside us as our best man. Just last month, on Sept. 14, he turned 90, on the same day Brad and I celebrated our 18th wedding anniversary. I will always treasure that he and I shared that date.

Walter was more than Chekov. He was a writer, a teacher, a thoughtful man, and a loyal friend. To the fans who loved him for so many years, thank you. He loved you too.

Rest well, my dear friend. Keep navigating a steady course.
