@whitequark is there any kind of practical device, such as a UPS, which if placed between the device and the wallsocket will remove this possibility?

We were cleaning up some very old code, and in the process broke our app running on iOS 12 and earlier (who knew there were so many of you using old iPhones as radios!)
It's fixed now, sorry about that!
@somafm Radios and picture galleries are the first things to turn old tech into, I'm telling you as a vintage device collector and long time soma.fm listener.
If you're referred to a GIC, this is how long you'd be waiting for a first appointment...

“The ubiquity of technology has had more of an impact on our civil rights than any legal changes,” EFF's Jennifer Lynch told @Newsweekdotcom on the PATRIOT Act’s 25th anniversary. “In 2001, people were still using landlines, and social media as we know it today didn’t exist.” https://www.newsweek.com/patriot-act-turns-25-what-happened-americans-rights-12607342

The point was on the complaining about AI because of trends in how humans write (which is where AI got it from in the first place) when quite visibly using those same trends, but sure, why not.
the em dash is just one tick. eicker has at least five of those to the point where it’s embedded into the logical flow of the argument and the sentence structure

Does she even know he doesn't see her as a person?
@Happyfishmedia It would perhaps be more sensible to just have my existing one repaired...
but why not have two!?
@aurynn exactly 😅... Also, it's raining, so it's perfect weather to buy more camera gear
hey why are you asking the people in this town that clearly doesn't have any kind of technology whether you can get a library card
if everyone in this town is illiterate why do you need help to run the library surely it's just a building where nothing ever happens
A high performer at Microsoft (200/200 means they got 200% of target bonus and stock compensation) was advised by their manager to take the voluntary retirement program.
Assuming the previous 30% acceptance rate, Microsoft needs 18,000 people to leave the company. There will be layoffs otherwise.
"Why work hard when you're going to be laid off anyway?" is an increasingly popular mantra in big tech.
@carnage4life Quiet quitting is real

I know "gigantic" is relative, but the user in question always had a paragraph of roughly 3-4 sentences, each of which only had up to 1 dependent/independent clause. So the paragraphs were actually short, we're not talking walls o' text. But that also means the user was never communicating complex ideas or nuance. If for whatever reason I didn't want to outright label them an AI bot, I would still feel comfortable labeling them a low-effort quipper or engagement baiter.
New: Proton, the company behind ProtonMail, emailed staff to say it will be 're-interviewing' workers about how they use AI. The implication is, if you're not using AI, or won't learn, you may lose your job. “These re-interviews are consequential,” a leaked email seen by 404 Media reads.

@josephcox and there goes a company I will never give my money.
The Steam Machine has finally arrived.
Due to the fact this one will have ridiculous amounts of external storage drives plugged in, it has half as much internal SD space than the VR headset does.
But will get 25+ Tb of external stuff anyway like a good media machine wants.
The WiFi dongle did work, at least a bit, sometimes. So that must be a 7.4 kernel?
Seems to claim 'disconnected' quite a lot in Desktop mode. And currently Steam VR is failing on the Steam Machine in desktop mode entirely. Though it did work for a moment at lunchtime.
So. Once again, not a great start.
Its small and pretty and cubic and has no audio-jack (but the USB-c -> optical I have is fine).
@pre switch to beta channel on all devices, first thing to do.
Comically large mug of tea, Teto for scale.
