Tina, your only other bartender, got shitfaced on shift again and fucked a customer. You heard about it because the only other customer in the bar complained that he wasn't also getting some.

Do you let it slide and keep or on, because you're the only bar in town and there's no one else who wants to work here?

Or do you fire her and risk not being able to find anyone else and have to work all the bartending shifts yourself?

Just realized Google was recording my phone calls on my older Pixel phone. I'm 99% certain that I didn't set it to record calls, so this likely happened during an update of the calling app. Even if the recordings were local only (which I can't determine so far), I'm not happy about this.

You know, I didn't really mind a whole lot when IRC first died off. Software projects and nerd groups can use the platform they want, they spread across mostly forums and blogs. Later reddit, which was unfortunately a bit too central, but oh well, I'll let it slide.

But these days I feel like I want to burn the internet down and drag everyone back to IRC even if I have to do so by force, every time I see a "Join our Discord server"

It’s mandatory that every article written about Covid include some bullshit about the virus magically becoming milder over time and immune systems getting swole and tuff from the combination of vaccinations and infections, even when the rest of the article is like “Covid will fuck you up eventually, if it hasn’t already.”

Milder Infections, Continued Risk
Covid infections have generally become milder as the virus has mutated and new variants have circulated. Additionally, scientists suspect that the more times you've been exposed to Covid - whether through infections or vaccination — the better your immune system becomes at recognizing and responding to the virus.
On average, the risk of getting seriously sick from an infection - whether it's your first or your fifth — has significantly declined, Dr.
Al-Aly said.
But, he added, that does not mean an infection is inconsequential.

But, he added, that does not mean an infection is inconsequential. There's no such thing as a risk-free case, experts said.

But it's been challenging to find more recent health record data that examines cases of reinfection with the latest variants of the virus, said Richard Moffitt, a researcher at Emory University, who was an author on the 2024 report.
"How many times have you gotten Covid, and then how many times, of those, does your doctor know about?" he said. "The surveillance as far as how many people getting Covid end up in the medical system has really plummeted."
Researchers do know that the severity of a case, as well as the symptoms, can vary from one infection to the next. A person who was asymptomatic during one Covid infection could develop a sore throat and cough the next. Someone who had cold symptoms during a first infection could have an upset stomach as part of another bout.
"Every infection is a chance at something going wrong," Dr. Moffitt said. — But it's been challenging to find more recent health record data that examines cases of reinfection with the latest variants of the virus, said Richard Moffitt, a researcher at Emory University, who was an author on the 2024 report. A number of studies have shown that each time someone contracts Covid introduces an opportunity to develop long-term symptoms.
Researchers often compare it to Russian roulette: Any infection could be the one that leads to long Covid.
"Every time there's a wave, there's another wave that's going to follow with patients developing new onset long Covid," said Akiko Iwasaki, an immunologist at Yale University.
Some researchers think that reinfections are part of why the number of people with long Covid has plateaued. Even though some people have recovered from their long-term symptoms, there's continually a new influx of patients developing the condition, said Dr. Danny Altmann, a professor of immunology at Imperial College London. And if someone already has long Covid and then contracts the virus again, that patient risks experiencing more severe symptoms. — A number of studies have shown that each time someone contracts Covid introduces an opportunity to develop long-term symptoms. Sometimes my wife gets up in the night for the bathroom or look after the kids. Occasionally I'll indulge in self pleasure, into a sock, to help get back to sleep. Unfortunately I'm now traumatised after accidently using the socks she brought me with pictures of the kids on

TIL the fediverse basically DDOS's sites when you share a link.

I shared a link from NPR Tiny Desk but there was no image preview or video embed. After investigating this I learned that when you do that, each instance picks up the link and individually retrieves the link preview nearly simultaneously. For gargantuan sites like YT or Reddit, this is a trivial amount of traffic and not a problem, but for smaller sites like NPR this results in a sort of botnet DDOS attack on the site’s servers. More here. Another example here . For that reason, NPR has blocked Fediverse servers like Mastodon.

I have experienced this on my personal server as well (DDOS), but at the time didn’t know why, exactly.

This isn’t the end of the world, but certainly is not great and hurts engagement with the content. Is there a solution for this? Perhaps using some sort of webtorrent service like PeerTube where they just fetch the information from another fediverse server instead of the source server? Maybe fetching embeds client-side? At least that would stagger the requests.

Is there a reason why the publishing instance is not downloading the preview image, and then submits it with the post to the other instances? This way they would not have to fetch it themselves.
