Just realized Google was recording my phone calls on my older Pixel phone. I'm 99% certain that I didn't set it to record calls, so this likely happened during an update of the calling app. Even if the recordings were local only (which I can't determine so far), I'm not happy about this.

Recordings are local only, for G does not want to act against ancient laws that forbid siphoning it out. What they do instead is this recording is processed by the cpu on your phone, using your energy, to the 'tokenized' form. It is not a transcript, to preserve privacy of users, of course. If for example you was talking with your psychiatrist about your being recently not happy about panopticon around you, the G servers might have got only a dozen or so 'tokens'. One being a number with meaning 'psychiatrist', other ascribed to the drugs prescribed and so on. They do not like to waste their precious bandwidth, you know, and cpu power better spent on pushing aiads...
@dangillmor how did you find out?
@mihamarkic checked settings...
@dangillmor did it actually record things and there's recordings on your phone? because what the "turn on call recording" setting supposedly does is only ask during calls if you want them recorded? it seems to have been turned on by default since forever on my pixel. @mihamarkic
@dangillmor Turn on call recording?
