I shared a link from NPR Tiny Desk but there was no image preview or video embed. After investigating this I learned that when you do that, each instance picks up the link and individually retrieves the link preview nearly simultaneously. For gargantuan sites like YT or Reddit, this is a trivial amount of traffic and not a problem, but for smaller sites like NPR this results in a sort of botnet DDOS attack on the site’s servers. More here. Another example here . For that reason, NPR has blocked Fediverse servers like Mastodon.

I have experienced this on my personal server as well (DDOS), but at the time didn’t know why, exactly.

This isn’t the end of the world, but certainly is not great and hurts engagement with the content. Is there a solution for this? Perhaps using some sort of webtorrent service like PeerTube where they just fetch the information from another fediverse server instead of the source server? Maybe fetching embeds client-side? At least that would stagger the requests.

Coding with AI unlocks so many feels:

- But I spent years learning this!

- The puzzle of coding was my fav thing. Now what will I do?

- Am I boiling the oceans because I’m lazy?

- Now I can prototype or create an app faster than 3D printing something!

- It’s just a tool. Assemblers are tools. Compilers are tools.

- Is my brain atrophying?

- it’s all based on stolen work, isn’t it?

- Wow this is unlocking so many projects I’ve always wanted to do.

@mcc it says a lot about how much is wrong about this layout that i hadn't even noticed the bloody round PFPs

(when I was six words into this toot, the input box jumped two inches up because of a popup asking me to change the post's language to Catalan)

@djsundog he could go toe-to-toe with Honest Achmed's! https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=647959

@mcc I heard you liked rounded corners, so I've got some rounded corners for your rounded corners.

This one. It's called A Day In Port Sunlight, and I painted it en plein air last year.

@zmz Well good news about masto-fe.superseriousbusiness.org

I find it a bit depressing that a single photo of my dog doing nothing gets way more attention on Mastodon than any of the hard work I put into making things. I should just delete my account and create one for my dog instead. 😅 Pets > People…apparently?

A great thread about entry-level musical devices.

I don't remember some of these.

I'm sure I will when I hear them, but I don't recognize them by name.

@WizardOfDocs @Canageek New attack vector: Stale jokes.
