This is how programmers fight climate change: support older equipment when it's viable. Not cause mountains of Windows 10 computers to be thrown out.
This analyst's report from Apollo about AI uses the term "S&P 493" to refer to the "S&P 500 minus the Mag 7" - because if you take out the AI companies, the S&P 500 is tanking. https://www.apollo.com/wealth/insights-news/insights/daily-spark/no-signs-of-ai-payoff-outside-the-tech-sector
@pluralistic At the tech conference I was at last week, which was of course 2/3 AI, it was often taken as self-evident that AI had given us huge gains. I should look up some of those people and send them this ...
Been thinking about that space simulator I want to write for Tiny BASIC.
Perhaps it can be like a fetch quest? You must travel from location to location dropping off cargo.
While playing Stellaris, I thought about the "prime directive"--in Stellaris you are not necessarily prohibited from interacting with pre-FTL civilisations.
What if this can have some bearing on the game I want to make?
Maybe there can be systems that are already claimed by big space powers.
Suppose you join a new club, or start a new job and meet a group of 15 to 20 new people all at once. How long would it take you to learn all of their names?
@futurebird My best "receipt" for being bad at remembering faces:
In one of the Marvel movies, there's a masked character. Halfway through the movie, he takes it off and the audience audibly gasps. I'm thinking, "Am I supposed to recognize this person?"
Reuters reports that in the British Columbia election on Saturday, the Conservatives have won for first time in almost a century, defeating the NDP’s David Eby, who had called a snap election that has massively backfired.
@JonChevreau I'm alternating between fits of silent screaming rage/anxious fears/depressive feels & an increased need to find some useful distractions today/for the coming days.
Ooooh, #FancyRocks!!!
@ruari ooh, I've read about those! Natural hexagonal rock sections, right?
@renatoram @Gina yes indeed. for Italy I recommended Bologna, which is a vibrant city, foodie heaven and a close drive to the sea...

Oh, anyone reading this thread as result of @pluralistic boosting my quote toot would probably also appreciate this. Excellent (albeit depressing) analysis of AI as an enclosure movement for the information commons: https://arxiv.org/abs/2610.27251
A minha alma está parva, isto é o que o governo a dizer que não precisam de votar no chega porque eles próprios fazem o trabalho sujo deles?

@algernon For my own projects I don't actually feel that the fact I won't use LLMs is important. There are so many more important aspects that I feel are more important. But maybe I'm wrong about that? Maybe I should make it more prominent?
@liw when everything's going slop, a clear indicator that a project won't, is, imo important. Perhaps not the most important thing, but important enough to write at least "LLM? No ty." in the readme.
No need for anything complex, a simple indicator. Heck, a no-ai badge would be enough for me!
Such a policy means that it's not only you who won't use ai, but contributors won't, either. That part is why I think an ai policy is important.
Morning Sheep Time
Morning after the storm, sheep all out after having spent the night in the stables. Biscuits all round, Brambles looks like he's been losing arguments with Buster. Panda as usual demanding cuddles with a series of sharp taps. Crows down promptly too.

Open Source and Free Software is not "an alternative to $PROPRIETARY". In my opinion it's a parallel world where similar questions lead to marginally or completely different solutions to problems. Whenever you compare FOSS to proprietary things, you end up in a dependency, dictated by the proprietary vendor. That limits creativity and blocks ways to better and more interoperable solutions that share code. We should build better worlds, not open knock-offs :)
