Hey team! Posting here for the first time in… 800 days?! (Oh gosh, yikes)

As a reminder, this is my official Mastodon account. You can tell this is my official account because I’m posing dramatically on a chaise! Accept no imitation and report imposters! (Luckily the imposter has already been suspended!)

Thanks to all who alerted me!

Really contemplating taking sites offline until I figure out how bad this PHP thing is…

@AbandonedAmerica I suspect what I say below will have no value or application but I thought I'd mention it anyway as it might benefit others.

The US Customs and Border Patrol (yes, that CBP) has programs to block physical goods that violate trademark, patent, or (sometimes) copyright at the point of importation. It's not foolproof, nor is in inexpensive. And it probably does not work for electronic junk that is arguably on foreign servers.

One of the reasons that I'm intrigued with what you are doing is that every now and then I meet with various IP lawyers and I am sure that events such as this will coming up with increasing frequency. In your situation you are largely on the same side of the issue as will be many large/wealthy IP owners in the US - movie studios, music publishers, etc.

@mark I don’t have pets though most posts don’t get much recognition.
Maybe i should get a pet or make totally nutty political statements. ☝️🚀

When the state chooses which trans women get to receive the feminizing hormone replacement therapy that is so critically important in being able to live comfortably and safely as women, the result is inevitably that the state will only extend that permission to those who are straight and conventionally attractive.

i am so damn tired of cis women who get called out for being weird about queer men instantly resorting to "you're oppressing me!!!" as a defense. you're not being oppressed, you're being a freak and queer men are fucking sick of it

Similar, except those are caused by users visiting a link, whereas the Fediverse issue is federated servers gathering info before users even see a link.

So we need people to just mass post links to bad websites, is what you’re saying.

i’m feeling less ambivalent about those reddit repost bots for a moment

The invisible hand of the market at work

I shared a link from NPR Tiny Desk but there was no image preview or video embed. After investigating this I learned that when you do that, each instance picks up the link and individually retrieves the link preview nearly simultaneously. For gargantuan sites like YT or Reddit, this is a trivial amount of traffic and not a problem, but for smaller sites like NPR this results in a sort of botnet DDOS attack on the site’s servers. More here. Another example here . For that reason, NPR has blocked Fediverse servers like Mastodon.

I have experienced this on my personal server as well (DDOS), but at the time didn’t know why, exactly.

This isn’t the end of the world, but certainly is not great and hurts engagement with the content. Is there a solution for this? Perhaps using some sort of webtorrent service like PeerTube where they just fetch the information from another fediverse server instead of the source server? Maybe fetching embeds client-side? At least that would stagger the requests.

@fluffy IIRC there is a get current location block, but the easier method is usually just check for your home wifi

What does someone need to be able "to navigate the Internet in their own language"? At the Coalition on Digital Impact (CODI) this year, we looked at the whole "stack" of systems people use, and created our "Language Infrastructure Framework" as a tool to help:

Comments and feedback are definitely welcome!

@DotMaetrix the part about the televangelist cameos reminded me that there are also cameos from libertarian and right-wing pundits in one of the "atlas shrugged" movies, which happen at a point in the plot where nearly all of the "great men" have been taken by john galt (and the u.s. is nearly finished becoming a full-on communist state, with full state control of the media)

which means that (1) they're basically admitting that they're not good enough for galt's capitalist paradise, (2) they somehow still have media jobs and are able to express their opinions on TV in a world where the socialists are in unquestioned control of the whole of the united states (they all use their own real-life shows' sets for the cameo segments, none of them are presented as if they're doing pirate broadcasting)

@babe I love the way he stops to read the sign! 😆
