Earlier this year, stories of individual engineers using AI to rewrite massive codebases were rumors inside Big Tech.
Now Microsoft Distinguished Engineer Stephen Toub has shared how he used AI agents to rewrite 430K lines of GitHub Copilot from TypeScript to Rust.
14 weeks elapsed. ~$120K in AI tokens. ~3 weeks of his time.
He estimates it would previously have taken a team 1–2 years.
@carnage4life Has he assessed the quality of the rewrite? & if so, using what measures?
I ask, because a recent test of simple maintenance tasks on WordPress plugins resulted in remarkable failure levels.

@joby @schof @ai6yr @ryanc @paul_ipv6 That's the other thing I say a lot, that the existence of a billionaire denotes a self-selection bias in the data to begin with; normal people typically don't exhibit the behaviors required to amass a hoard so large it can't be "spent."
@NosirrahSec @joby @schof @ryanc @paul_ipv6 Having met a bunch of these folks, there's definitely a little of both. Depending on how they got those dollars. There's definitely a selection of those ultrarich ($100M+), born into that money, who just live in their own wealth driven world, and are just USED to demanding everyone do what they want... this is the folks who grew up as the rich kids. Then there are a lot of the ultrarich (typically company founders/CEOs/etc.) who truly believe they are smarter/better/etc. than everyone else, that's why they are rich (this is the M*sk adjacent people), and their only qualifier for if they listen to someone is HOW MUCH IS THE NET WORTH of that person. No matter the area of expertise, etc.... your net worth is more important than your experience/etc. in any particular area. This is reinforced by popular support of this. (the number of times I have heard, from everyday people on the street, "E*** M*** is a genius! Why else would he be so rich?!!?")
