@elricofmelnibone Filesystem Linux is more or less dead.
#Empathy doesn't mean you let everyone immigrate. It means you try to understand everyone's concerns. Doing that will naturally lead to an effort to balance competing interests based on how much a compromise will impact the different sides.
Empathy would lead you to make the middle class give up some so that the poor are not desperate, but not before you make billionaires live like the middle class do, and help many more people in the process.
@mm Sanka is "without caffeine"
The "made with AI" thing is a good start but I want *more* mandatory disclosures on Steam.
"This game was made by a studio that required devs to work six months of crunch."
"This game was made by union-busters."
"75% of this team was laid off the day after it shipped."
"Profits from this game enrich the Saudi Government."
Any others?
I hate the slop summary at the bottom I should find it somewhere else
@dajb as much as this is a bummer, as a Dad I really respect the bang-for-the buck of Hot Wheels. A 5-pack is like $6 and while I just checked some lying around the house and couldn't find a 2026, they're usually much better made than the other cars we somehow accumulate. And older Hot Wheels are very easy to find.
@hunterking My daughter was *obsessed* by Hot Wheels cars between the ages of about 7 and 10. She had ~120 of them, knew all of their details and had given them all names!
@bright_helpings @sparrowsion What the fuck?!
@MrFesser @bright_helpings @sparrowsion +1 to what the fuck

@Amgine Never used it
Years ago I wrote https://xcb.freedesktop.org/ for X Window System clients, and yesterday I wrote my first Wayland client. My goodness, I can see the impact of every lesson the Wayland designers learned from X, and for that matter from XCB. I'm honestly really impressed by the design of the Wayland protocol!
I saw somebody complaining the other day about how much code you have to write just to open a window in a Wayland client. I think it's important to understand going in that this is a protocol designed to make hard things possible, not to make easy things easy; if you want to do easy things, use a toolkit like Gtk or Qt or SDL. So my program may seem like a lot of code for what it does: it just opens a window, periodically flashes between white and black, and measures some timing statistics, and I wrote over 300 lines of Rust for that. (I chose not to use the wayland-client crate's helpers for binding globals, so it could have been shorter, but I wanted to see what working with the raw protocol felt like.) But I know from experience that if you cut out any of the steps I had to do, you cut off the ability to handle more complicated scenarios.
I believe Wayland made the right complexity tradeoff here: the low-level protocol is very flexible, and ease of use belongs in higher-level abstractions that can pick which aspects of that flexibility to discard for simplicity.
@jamey Anyone who works with something like Wayland can nitpick about a huge number of specific design decisions. But overall it's a simple wire format with some clean core protocols.
The part about not focusing on making easy things easy (in a low level protocol) is something I see even more with people complaining about Vulkan. OpenGL 1.0 is a way better API for "ease of displaying one triangle", but that's not exactly the point.
(Meanwhile the loudest voices complaining about Wayland often don't really seem to be familiar with what exactly it is, or how developing a client for it compares to developing for X...)
@Canageek I've now seen one person say OpenOffice has been abandoned for long enough that it can't have gone sloppy; I think it was in that thread you boosted
@WizardOfDocs Sadly that also probably means security risks :(
Well. Got laid off, position terminated this Saturday. I need some time to remake my resume and everything but if anyone is looking for a Front-End engineer with 12yrs of exp in the Bay Area/Remote U.S. Ping me.
I really really hate running. It is stupid and idiotic and hurty and hot and my legs hurt and it's night time and I just want pie and sleep. Why can't it be pie and sleep time. Why must it always be hot and hurty time. Why not pastry and restorative rest. Why can't I get what I need from flour. Flour loves me. Running is my sworn enemy. It's like I'm in that stupid video game from the 1980s where you had to mash the buttons to make the person run. Only I am the person and I must mash my own buttons. Why cannot someone mash my buttons for me. Why do they even need to be mashed. THIS IS 2026 WE HAVE WIRELESS CHARGING.
Quiet, brain weasels, Ben's got runnin' to do.
@cwebber i'm not worried about nlnet but fsfe. i have entirely separate concerns about nlnet
@hipsterelectron Ah, I'm admittedly not up to date with what legal advice the FSFE has been dropping
I want to live somewhere else. The problem is that I don't have an obvious somewhere else to go to
I wish there were an upstairs (no not Heaven, I'm not being philsophical) a physical upstairs I could retreat to from right here right now. And when I got bored come back downstairs and go about the rest of my day. On long-distance airline routes, the crew have a hidden sleeping for away from the passenger cabin. Something like that would suffice.
@Amgine Sadly Texlive, The last functioning distribution is slop
Most of the packages probably have not been updated in a decade though
TeXStudio added slop features
TeXmaker (What it is forked from) didn't when I last updated it, though, I haven't checked for either updates or slop in years
