We report: late afternoon, we have repeatedly spotted a squirrel running down the garden fences around here. We come here at this time specifically because we think we might spot it again. Coincidentally, it is lovely that the sunset happens at the same time (and the rain, too).
Heard a noise at the door. Open to see a person walking away. Turns out it was someone leafleting for the Conservative Party. Instead of putting their flyer through the letterbox they'd left it in a muddy boot by the front door. Which feels like a metaphor somehow.
@TheBreadmonkey perhaps they saw the sign "I've never been to Eton" :)

can we shout out to the fediverse developers, for making the fediverse possible
shout out to the lemmy developers for not making us be stuck on the other site
shout out to mastodon devs for making us have a better life than on Twitter
shout out to the pixelfed devs for allowing a actual photography platform to exist
shout out to the peertube devs for helping us not be stuck on youtube until the end of time
ETA: Shout out to the server operators who make the stuff be done
Change is always hard. It seems many people are disappointed with the new Mastodon version.
Once admins upgrade to v5, there's no going back to v4. I hope users won't be hateful towards admins for upgrading the software. If the change is too much for you, we have options in fedi: apps, alternative interfaces like elk, alternative instances running forks like glitch-soc or my instance mementomori.social, and even something other than Mastodon that suits you better and lets you connect with Mastodon users (Akkoma, Friendica, GoToSocial, and so on).
We can thankfully modify and use the fedi as we see fit, unlike in big tech platforms where we just need to accept the change. That's the beauty of it. Please don't give shit to people who are trying to do their best. There's a lot of good in this. Together, we can make the fediverse even better.
@rolle I must admit when I saw it for the first time I was like "What the hell is this?" But now I don't think it is horrible. I have a bit hard time to find new post -button but in general it feels pretty good. It always takes a bit time to get used to new things but in general I don't feel the update is horrible.

If free software is not about ethics, then what the fuck is its point.
I've started trying netbsd recently.
I was curious how well the linux compatibility layer works, so I compiled os-test on a musl-based linux machine, and ran the tests on netbsd.
What I immediately found was that there's apparently no sure fire way to distinguish the OS a given ELF binary targets. There is an "OS/ABI" field in the header, but it's typically set to "System V" even on Linux.
So netbsd relies on some heuristics. One of which is to look at the program interpreter. But netbsd only knows the name of the glibc dynamic loader, not the musl one.
So I've now landed my first contribution to netbsd, to teach it about the musl dynamic loader!
It is possible to construct several narratives about how we got from then to now; the corporatisation of sponsorship, the wider reactionary movements against feminism, the normalization of authoritarianism, the centralization and fracturing of online spaces, and most recently those preaching the doctrine of claude et al.
They are all equally true, and just as equally entangled with each other.
Working together to destroy the illusion that there was a space with enough shared ground to work.

Dont forget the instance operators who actually keep the servers running. Donations keep instances up.

And if you can, send some money their way. This place runs on donations.
"Volpeon, what's wrong?" Nothing, I need no reason to scream.
Any laptop made within the last ... 15 years is probably capable enough to run a modern linux distribution (this is not the place to complain about linux) and a video editor like kdenlive and, having done so, it becomes as capable or more capable than basically any television studio prior to the proliferation of NLE.
A single decade old laptop (one that can still be reliably picked up on the used market for $100 or so) can reliably be used to produce *and distribute* film and television, as long as you have access to a decent camera (and you probably do!)
also there are domains within which the "it's not art/creative" arguments become very silly. look at generative art through the decades. look at shadertoy. it's all just a wide fuzzy spectrum between that and a compiler. checkmate! under Woke 3 you will be issued a beret and are required to wear it while programming.

Aww it’s a little CowBee, here to spread more misinformation.
For someone that seemingly understands how western media has lied about their much less controversial enemies, one has to wonder why you’re supporting the same people that lied about WMDs in Iraq, with an equally ridiculous line of logic that isn’t supported by pretty much any part of the world outside the west.

They’re already here. If someone tries to fight with you unreasonably, leave a clarifying comment and let it go. They’re not as prolific here, but if you spend any time in news or politics communities, you’ve seen them.

Thanks, Lemmy folks! I have been, and intend to continue to be, intending to put up a server.
I’m sorry, in advance, for what is going to happen to all your hard work, as Reddit craters and all the oligarch bots start coming here to manipulate the populace / control the narrative.
As I’ve been saying since Usenet and Slashdot; it was good while it lasted.
All of my slop is, and will always be, made by a fish-person.
It really is not that difficult to make your own slop, idk why people would use bots made by fascists for that
I will continue to make very bad music*, maybe I can put AI out of business?

The next noise I am working on will be really horrible*
* I mean it in a good way.
unfortunately, by accident I made one track that almost sounds like music, my bad
