Damn… We should really start fighting for a world where people making the option of not using digital technologies are respected, as written in the Off-Punk Manifesto…
This isn't the first data-scrape/AI history attempt I've seen and I'm sure there'll be more. If this sounds negative, it's not to dunk on this guy in particular: rather, it's because I really think it's important for you, dear reader, to carefully think about these problems. We're going to face more of them in public history - and it's going to exacerbate existing problems with how we ensure good quality information gets a hearing. I hope we can learn to do better.
Here endeth the thread.
How would you explain the mandelbrot set to a sixth grade student who is trying to distract you from teaching your substitute lesson on solving linear equations?
(I swear to god these kids pass around lists of which topics distract which teachers most easily. They know the ants won't work, it's too obvious. But this was a good one.)
Said student also has some peers convinced that the mandelbrot set will "eat you" and I haven't done much to clear up this rumor.

If you have a function, you can take the output of it and feed it back in. This is called iteration. If you keep doing this, one of three things will happen: it'll head off to infinity, or it'll get closer and closer to one point, or it'll just bounce around within a range of values forever. We call these attractors. There's a simple formula, f(z)=z^2+c, where the z and c are what's called complex numbers. You can pick a value of c and iterate this formula. 1/2

Incredible shot.
Who here is still using Gemini?
(the protocol, not the LLM)
@ChrisWere still playing that game with flower...

Why do people bother reading Anthropic’s marketing blogspam? Have you read the leaked Claude source code? Have you seen how they try to cover up their embarrassing security track record and play it like their models are super intelligent proto-gods? Do you not realize that there is some level of incompetence at play here?
Also… read third party sources man. These “AI-Native SDLC Guides” they publish are marketing. They’re selling the dream of firing workers so managers can make bigger bonuses.
"I no longer believe that our technology will have a net positive impact on society. I think there's a fantasy world where AI can help decarbonise grids, cut waste, protect ecosystems, and benefit humanity. But it's not this world, and it's not this type of general-purpose AI we are racing to develop. Racing to deploy agentic AI in society as it is now and in this historical moment is a terrible idea, and will definitely be a net evil.
Technology is NOT a neutral tool. This assessment assumes we can separate technology from the context it's deployed into, but we should not: we have a responsibility to assess the tool in the context in which it's going to be used. It also assumes we can separate the technology from who owns it, builds it, controls it, and benefits from it."

Government must move away from toxic social media platforms | Open Rights Group [Video]
We shouldn’t be forced to use toxic platforms that track and profile us in order to get public information.
Platforms such as Facebook, Instagram and YouTube track and profile their users so that they can target advertising towards them.
Their business models fuel online harms by pushing more and more extreme content to users. Despite this, these platforms are one of the primary ways that government departments share public information.
Tell your MP to support the EDM calling on the UK Government to ensure that all public sector social media content is published on open, decentralised and federated platforms!

@ftranschel If the judges thinking about this are smart (and they are) they will wait with their annoucement. And don't forge the precedent that the republicans delayed new judges to wait until the next election 😉 Tough for them to claim a 180 is totally normal ...
@jwildeboer Right, but there is still the pronounced latency between retirement and the confirmation proceedings. If the former doesn't happen before end of Nov, I think that's never going to be enough time to go through for the latter.
"Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, who is likely to return as majority leader next year, promised in an interview with The Associated Press that Democrats will prevent Trump from installing a “right-winger” on the Supreme Court and that they are “not going to allow any crappy nominees” elsewhere in the federal judiciary or in Trump’s Cabinet."
I get a discount at a supermarket if I forget the card I just take things to the value of what the discount would have been, that's alright isn't it?
@fesshole A loyalty card discount you award yourself is just shoplifting with a spreadsheet. The self-checkout cameras are already writing your origin story.

@wingo give me stringref and give me bignums!
Since today's Bandcamp Friday, I was wondering... how much #music people tend to buy each year?
Do you buy music, or only stream? How many albums* do you buy** each year?
If you feel inclined to boost for reach, I would be grateful.
* Album format can be digital downloads, CDs, vinyl, cassettes, or whatever. Important thing is buying the music in some format to keep/collect vs. just paying a streaming service and relying on it to preserve your music collection.
Feel free to comment if you buy music, but only singles, etc.
** Torrenting or other means of grabbing music without paying doesn't count.
@jzb I tend to buy a single album per year (typically in CD form + digital download if they offer it). That's more a function, I guess, of what bands I listen to right now that are publishing new work versus listening to older stuff.

@jeffjarvis Also, yes, please, PLEASE go all-in on cybertaxis, because they will fail just as spectacularly, especially with his political project self-immolating even worse than his trucks - and maybe then the market will finally call in all the debt markers he has tied to Tesla stock, which will sink his entire fortune 🤞

Anyone know about Harmony (ActivityPub chat like Discord)?
Federated social app: Discord-style servers and chat with ActivityPub.

I don’t remember hearing of it till now, yet it claims a lot of desired features. Github page shows only one contributor, one fork, 44 stars; lot of commits in the last week, oldest 3 years ago; GNU Affero General Public Licence v3.0.
