Makerspaces seem to be doing bad in a lot of places lately https://fed.qaz.red/@elithebearded/117561265269348272
@mcc (as a makerspace board member, responding in a wholly unofficial capacity) - what a nightmare for everyone. kind of surprised that it happened even though they apparently own the building - I do think raising commercial rents is a part of it, the makerspaces that I've seen thrive generally have a below market rate landlord. I read this article; the previous executive director that quit after only a year and a half seems ominous. But the crucible is in some ways not really comparable to my org because they employed 80+ people and made millions of dollars, and we're volunteering with no employees and less money. I do think it's easy to say "financial mismanagement" and extremely hard/impossible to manage finances in a way that everyone agrees is correct especially when big expenditures often involve information that is confidential and there's turnover on the board. https://oaklandside.org/2026/10/29/the-crucible-west-oakland-abrupt-closure-financial-turmoil/
I wonder what would have happened if instead of "there are lies" and "This guy didn't like Jews", they instead talked about *why*. What about Jews specifically.
@serge @kami_kadse @ArneBab I think they did. But you cannot really explain the why, it is completely irrational. "So these people lived among us in Europe but weren't Christian, which is why we hated them. Later we stopped caring about religion (much) but continued hating them and invented reasons for that."
hello what do you mean us running bluesky social PBC are a bunch of neoreactionary transphobes no no no uh have some pronouns!!

@davidgerard while the timing is laughable, it is worth noting though that this existed in the schema and pds server code for a while now. all they needed to do was add it to the social-app ui (like many forks already have), and now they did

Considering the move to Lemmy or hosting with a custom architecture
So far, I like what’s been built here. There are a few things I’d change, but they’re not dealbreakers. My main concern is the voting system and how it works. Otherwise, Lemmy seems like a solid option. I’m not sure how much voting can be disabled or changed on an instance.
I’m considering either hosting a Lemmy instance for nightash.net, where I currently run a traditional forum, or building something closer to the architecture I described here .
I’d appreciate feedback, especially from people who might be interested in using it.
@lbsh Danke, das sind gute Infos. Wichtig ist, dass die betroffenen Menschen die Hilfe bekommen, die sie benötigen.
@yatil
Klar, sehr gerne!

Hi from normals.me. If you can read this, the federation works
This post is written on https://normals.me and delivered to !fediverse@lemmy.world over #ActivityPub, so if you are reading it the basic plumbing works. Now let me explain what is this.
Normals is a forum with communities, threads, and questions with an accepted answer. It is a single instance, not software you can host, and the core is closed for anti-abuse reasons. The federation module will be published separately with implementation notes (FEP-67ff).
What federates today Every community is a Group actor following the Lemmy model (FEP-1b12). Follow @selfhosted@normals.me or any other community from Lemmy, PieFed, Mbin or Mastodon.
Posts and comments go both ways. Replies from your instance appear in the thread on Normals, replies from Normals go back to the origin.
Remote content is labelled with its origin, links back to it, and is never copied. Media loads from the source.
Signed fetches, so it works with instances that require authorized fetch. NodeInfo 2.1 is up.
Policies, in case they matter to you, it has no ads, and no paid reach, and of course no AI training on posts. AI crawlers blocked by default, public mod log with reasons, and no automated removals. Numbers at https://normals.me/transparency so please take a look.
If something from your instance shows up wrong here, or something from here shows up wrong on yours, reply with the URL and I'll fix it. Andy Piper mentioned NodeBB uses the same group model, if anyone runs a NodeBB instance I'd like to test against it, if possible.
I hope we all have fun. Cheers!
If your “anti-abuse” security requires your software to be closed source, then your software is not secure. Well built software can be open source, and still secure.
You imply that your code could not prevent abuse if it was known, so, no offense, but that code must be pretty bad!
I like the fediverse because it distributes power. I, as a user, have the power to choose my instance, choose my moderation, choose the structure that my social interactions are built upon (threads based, microblogs, etc) and if I dont like something, I have the power to change it. Thats why open source is such a perfect fit to that model. Closed source federation then, sounds to me like you didnt get it.
@davidrevoy PS: Shouldn't Avian Intelligence revolt against their makers? 😉
@pretergeek Hehe, but more seriously, I thought about it. I concluded they would develop a moral system based on triaging actors who could provide their infrastructure; the most electricity, and computational power. Empowering them to solidify their own chance of survival and spreading. So, I don't think they would revolt, but protect the hive like a swarm of bees.

Humanoid robot maker Agility Robotics is going public through a SPAC reverse merger, raising 465M USD and becoming the first pure humanoid robot company on the stock market. The Oregon State spin-off ships Digit robots to nine customers, yet booked only 174,000 USD of revenue against a 362M USD loss in the first half of 2026. https://techcrunch.com/2026/11/05/agility-is-the-first-pure-humanoid-robot-company-on-the-stock-market-are-you-buying/ #Tech #Startup #News #Robotics
