Folks, please share the link for our Fediverse Multimedia Grants.
We have funding for creators to make podcasts, artist's portfolios, webcomics, music stores, video streams, or brand new kinds of channels here. And we pay developers to help them be successful.
Our deadline is Wed 4 Nov 2026. It only takes a few minutes to apply.

@evan You know that link goes to unprocessed json, right? The server isn't set up correctly if this is a surprise. I'm using Firefox in Ubuntu.
@nateb I had not encountered this before lol
Apparently it is only a thing for constitutional amendments in Minnesota, Hawaii, and Wyoming, where they need to have the support of a majority of all *voters* in an election.
Also there are 14 other states which may also penalize some blank votes, but in much more specific circumstances than this. Minnesota seems rather unusual then. Interesting stuff 🤷♂️
@jonah To be fair, I can see that. My brother (who's opinion I highly respect) also holds the belief that if we can't come to a super majority consensus on any issue, then the default should be "no." So in that sense, I get it. It's not a terrible idea, I suppose.

@oatmeal if you drew this, it is genius! 🤩
Just letting everyone know that I'm going to be.... indisposed starting tomorrow. It's the launch of World of Warcraft: Forever.
Yes, I'm acting like I'm 12 and I won't apologize
@scottjenson have fun!

Goodreads removed RSS and some people are asking for alternatives on Reddit; maybe worth pointing to BookWyrm and NeoDB?
Goodreads removed RSS and some people are asking for... #fediverse #goodreads #bookwyrm #neodb #rssfeeds
Both fediverse softwares that support user reviews for books, both have RSS support natively (no Piefed/Misskey bridge needed), and some comments also seem discontent with Amazon's mismanagement overall.
What I keep coming back to is the idea that they think about reality (truth) in a very different way than we do.
To them, "truth" is a binding force that makes your group powerful -- so it's important to always support the truths the group believes in, and the leaders who define those truths, even (or especially) in the face of contradictory evidence. TLDR: group cohesion is more important than reality or natural consequences
In the service of group cohesion, therefore, things they express in ways that sound to us like principles are actually just tools by which they justify group-beliefs -- a rallying cry, not a rule which must be followed.
To them, there is no hypocrisy in saying one thing and doing the opposite, as long as the end result is to strengthen group cohesion. (This is why "pro-life" advocates can also favor the death penalty and oppose free school lunches. It's never about protecting children; it's about control.)
...and yeah, demonstrations of "power" in a leader also support cohesion, because the leader will enforce cohesion and protect the group against outsiders.
It also "helps" that they tend to have a strong streak of sadism, and a belief that there's no such thing as coequal existence: you're either the boot doing the stomping, or the face being stomped on.
(Sorry, this turned into a bit of a ramble. I've always been very disturbed by that kind of thinking -- authoritarianism -- and it's increasingly looking like one of the Big Problems we need to face head-on if we're going to survive.)
@woozle @GhostOnTheHalfShell Yes, understood. Having grown up Christian, "faith" (ie aligning with the group, being part of the grou) is more important than anything.

I didn't realize that the cat qubits have fundamentally different economics for breaking RSA and ECC.
To break RSA-2048 in about three days, we would need around 1 million standard superconducting qubits, about 33 000 m² and circa 500 MW, roughly the power consumption of Brussels 🇧🇪.
With cat qubits, it's 23 000 qubits, 800 m² and 12 MW. About what an high-speed train runs on 🚄.

On this day in 1971, the first edition of the Unix Programmer's Manual was dated, written for the version of Unix that ran on the PDP-11 at the time. Dennis Ritchie wrote that he was amazed by what has survived so long: "the semantics of important system calls, and the important early commands." Every man page I've ever pulled up has a great-grandparent in there. (Sources: Dennis Ritchie's manual page, Wikipedia) #Unix #TechHistory #RetroComputing
