@byte@awawa.club what you're referring to as slavery is in fact gnu/slavery or
> Once you have collected the details, you should send a precise report to the copyright holders of the packages that are being wrongly distributed. The GNU licenses are copyright licenses; they can be enforced by the copyright holders of the software. In addition, we encourage the use of any legal mechanism available to users for obtaining complete and corresponding source code, as is their right, and enforcing full compliance with the GNU GPL. After all, we developed the GNU GPL to make software free for all its users.
wow! it certainly looks like I can enforce my interpretation of the GPL and GNU can’t stop me actually
it certainly looks like I can choose to resolve the contradiction in that last sentence: that software isn’t free if it’s being used to take your life, or to discriminate against you, or to feed a system of plagiarism
@exa I expect nothing less from Matrix it’s nothing but pain.

What about reviews that are 12 years old, are they still worth the upload? Will it use the original date?
@Tionisla I don’t think what they’ve done is legal. But in a world of LLMs, it doesn’t really matter anyway, does it?
@sizeofvoid @Tionisla To be honest, it sounds absurd. "Hey, people are stealing our code, so we will leave friends (correct, fair friends) out so we can protect it".
While the bad ones will continue to steal.
It doesn't make sense, to me.
I’m not interested in roleplaying with you that there are threats to FOSS and that those theoretical threats make what I’m proposing impossible
there are real threats to FOSS, right now. they’re in the house with us. the men who told us they’d protect us from threats to FOSS all failed to defend FOSS from anything other than the thought experiments they came up with to manipulate us.
those men took those thought experiments so seriously that now emacs, my editor, has an official maintainer who is proudly pro-slavery. that’s how hard those men ignored real threats to play in a fantasy land where good slavers exist and they must have software freedom.
those men and their organizations have all failed.
Frau Palla wann endlich IPv6 im WIFIonICE?
@amy wie im Mittelalter
@georgetakei I only hesitate in calling him Ozymandias because some might think it references the Watchmen villain who was brilliant, insightful, and beautiful
the gnu’s stance on software freedom is so contradictory that it has made its software unusable for organizations with a declared anti-slavery policy: https://old.mermaid.town/@futzle/117579819845686933
their stance is, in fact, so contradictory that it’s incompatible with any group that’s anti-slavery. most groups of normal humans are anti-slavery. you have to be very cooked to be outwardly proud that you would accept slave labor in your uhh “software freedom” project in 2026 or… any other year, actually
when an organization makes contradictory and damaging statements that go against the moral purpose we were told we were working towards, it’s fine to ignore that organization’s statements. and yes, I know that GNU and the FSF were always like this. but none of us willingly contributed our labor to an organization that’s pro-slavery, did we.
I’m finding myself second guessing pretty much every word choice while here in the UK. I’m like, do they call it a “T-shirt” here? Someone could tell me they’re called “florbaglorbs” here and I’d be like oh okay
@finny@plush.city I think they call tanktop style undershirts vests.
like seriously, explain to me how we got here
“software freedom” somehow allows you to take someone else’s freedom to use and contribute to the software away, either by allowing your software to be used to kill them, or by allowing them to be personally threatened into not using or contributing to your software, or by allowing and in fact encouraging a corporation to suction up all your code (and theirs too, and everyone else who contributed in good faith) into a proprietary system, for use in proprietary codebases
what the fuck kind of freedom do you call that
