@aphyr why can't I have appliances that sound like Majel

@ajroach42 my first thought upon reading this was "oooh, sundogs?" but it might've been something else in the "ice halo" bucket – still neat regardless!

@clowdersiege yeah! It was almost sun dogs. That distance and shape, but refracting in colors.
Some kind of ice halo. Neat to see.
Blog post: Where are we going? https://bigzaphod.com/blog/where-are-we-going/
I should blog more often probably.
Although maybe after reading this, perhaps I shouldn't blog more.
Hmm.
@bigzaphod I fully agree with the latter points. The brittleness of it all is mind-boggling, to the point of being anxiety-inducing. The foundation we have is from the 90s, everything written in unsafe programming languages, except all the poorly thought-out specs and standards, when the entire software engineering discipline was still in its infancy. And as if someone decided 'eh, it's good enough', everyone stopped rewriting, rethinking, reinventing. We only piled more and more code on top, to hide all the ugliness beneath layers and layers of abstraction. Just like the sshole vulnerability recently, this is what happens when the stack is treated as a Jenga tower: no one dares to touch it, change it, no matter how arbitrary the state of it is. Instead we're forced to do the only realistic thing anyone can do, piling even more on top. However, I disagree with the former points. There has never been a better time to dig deep and wide into any detail. LLMs let you explore almost at the speed of thought. But it's a double-edged sword. Most people seem to use LLMs to generate heaps of new code, piling it on, rarely stopping to ask if they should, and often not even reading the output. This guarantees that no human will ever know how this next layer of cruft really works. These people advocate for ignorance over understanding, after all.
@ai6yr yep, and that’s an actual quote

So, if anyone tries to suggest "When Worlds Collide!" (1951) for #monsterdon
Don't.
Peak 1950s whiteness, boring dialog, eugenics, utterly dull plot for a world ender, and, most importantly, not even fun to riff.
@ai6yr same here in Minnesota. Ice releases people on Judges orders and then rearrest them just beyond the door.
Judges here are getting very angry with ICE about these rearrests.
@carstenfranke It seems they are flouting the law and don't care. Let's hope the election changes the direction of this. (no idea if it will... but at least, I have hope).
This goes ten times over if you work for Valve.
> Oh, well you should be more accommodating of people's desire to not be bothered with accessibility.
No, hell with that. I had an entire room full of people just leave silently after I begged them to pick a game I could see, then go on the next morning about how they'd all be there for each other. I'm sick of this crap.
Should have listened to my guidance counselor and made a career fleecing audiophiles

There was a ... I want to call it a sliver of a rainbow? But I guess it was like a halo or something.
But there were two rainbow-y stripes in the sky that were not connected, and were backwards (red on the right, green/blue/violet on the left)
It was neat. I don't think I've seen that before.

@ai6yr what the actual ....
Denver Post: Federal judges ordered their release from Aurora’s detention center.
ICE was waiting outside to re-arrest them.
A federal judge ripped into government officials for seemingly flouting her order in a hearing earlier this month
"...When Alex walked out of the Aurora immigrant detention center last month, freed by a judge’s order after more than a year inside, he heard someone yell his name.
He turned. Agents from Immigration and Customs Enforcement had been lying in wait for him, he said. They cuffed his hands, and one of them elbowed him in the leg. He was put into a vehicle and, after a short drive, returned to the facility he had thought he was leaving behind. ..."

@jdp23 This one is not in line with typical liberal Washington State. I did think it was presented in a confusing way on the ballot too.
Hopefully it will be struck down by the courts.
@zimfam agreed, the presentation on the ballot wasn't great. Also, while some legislators did a great job supporting it, the state Democratic party didn't help as much as they could have. Very frustrating.
