RIP Salon. It was tortured with many attempts to find its business model. Even so, it survived 31 years.
Goodbye from Salon

@jeffjarvis wow, to me it was "the" internet news magazine when those were new things
I would like "tfw when ur fucking dead lmao" on my tombstone.
need to start a last will and testament thread.
Funny, you can run Ted new.rtf, and it will ask to create an empty file and open the edit window, but when you select File -> New from the menu, it crashes.
...upgraded to NetBSD 11.1 via sysupgrade, which mostly seemed to work - except it couldn't install the RPI kernel.
So I fetched evbarm-earmv6hf/binary/kernel/netbsd-RPI.img.gz manually and extracted it over /boot/kernel.img
Wow, I can't believe #Salon is closing.
On this day in 1999, Judge Thomas Penfield Jackson released his Findings of Fact in United States v. Microsoft. He held that Microsoft had monopoly power in Intel-compatible PC operating systems, protected by an "applications barrier to entry."

@exlibrarykris its going to be a lot of journaling to try to identify what changed and get it into words.
Hopefully so I can help others find the same, since being trapped in our own shame is so devastating.
@aurynn even knowing that it's possible is inspirational ❤️
On 4 November, European.Social was officially launched in Berlin. More than 150 organisations and nearly 700 individuals, including PublicSpaces, are working towards an open social infrastructure, independent of the dominant commercial platforms. https://english.publicspaces.net/2026/11/04/lancering-van-european-social-de-beweging-voor-het-europese-open-sociale-web/
Congratulations! 🥳

There’s a UK parliament petition: "Launch a public inquiry into the UK's role in Israeli operations in Gaza". Needs around 22k more signatures to be considered for debate. https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/783252

I've been thinking.
In iocaine 4.x, I will not implement per-server initial-seed. I don't think anyone ever used it. I will also change the default seed to be time-based: when iocaine starts up, it'll set the seed based on the current time (chosen so that a new seed would be chosen every 67 hours or so). I might make that configurable too.
In practice, this means that iocaine will choose a time-based seed on startup, and if you restart it within 67 hours, that seed will remain the same. So if you restart it every week or so, it'll have a different seed, and will provide different garbage. That's a change from the iocaine 3 default, where the initial seed was always empty, and thus, the content never changed, unless the seed was also changed.
The syntax will be like:
![[ASW] Tsuihou sareta Tensei Juukishi wa Game Chishiki de Musou suru - 19 [1080p HEVC][F6F3CDE0]_00-12-45.390.jpg](https://media.shitposter.world/shitposter.club/55/55/36/555536b1a74168b770ba9704e1349c8361154580fac4fe82218deafc54ea1f92.jpg?name=FkLzeNRNoqep0g.jpg)
initial-seed "string"
initial-seed file="/path"
initial-seed from-time="67h"
Another thing I've been pondering about is instance-id. That is used to generate substrings for URL poisoning, and it should not change, ever, but should also be different from every iocaine installation, ideally.
In iocaine 3, this can be set via the config, and if it isn't set, iocaine generates a random string, and saves it in the state file.
iocaine 4 will use the state file more, and I thought: what if this wasn't configurable? Want to change the instance id? Change the state file. Or configure the script to use your own identifiers, rather than auto-generated ones. There's little point in making the instance-id configurable, in my opinion.
So painfully true.
@shoq I live in a certain congressional district in New Jersey, and I feel that way every two years. Chris Smith has been this area’s congressman since 1981. He voted in line with the orange rapist every time and has not had a meeting with his constituents since the 2024 elections. No Kings folks protest at his office every Tuesday. He had an intelligent young woman running against him this year and yet, he got the votes from this area again.

new genre of youtube video:
"I tried AI to do some significant task and it did it successfully and here's why that's a bad thing"
@mez For smaller VM pools I tend to use native Qemu/KVM, host passthrough mode, each guest on a local bridge network, reached over SSH with host-local pubkey auth, shell scripts for management. Locked down Debian GNU/Linux host. FreeBSD with bhyve is really nice too.
@mez When handing a VM to an org to manage themselves, I put it on the VPN, hand out the conf, and they tunnel right in without touching the host (not a fan of multi-user systems).
The work's not close to done, I get it, but the people of the world and the idea of that there's such thing as a society and a common good in sure do seem to be racking up the wins this week and I think that's worth celebrating.
