Interstate Compact (to nullify the electoral college) in striking distance:

Все нормально, мне просто нужно прорваться через эту осень...
@glyph It's possible we should be thinking hard about trying to figure out what glitch in executive brains briefly allowed Bell Labs to exist. Was it the three-martini lunch? were c-suites just so fucking blitzed out of their minds they forgot to do a class war for a while there? is the trick to somehow get C*Os off of cocaine and back on alcohol? stimulants are the problem. depressants are the answer
Michele Tafoya loses Minnesota Senate election.
The celebrity candidate lost.
Now she can go back to complaining about sports and politics.

NetBSD sysupgrade to 11.1 done on my personal servers.
Kinda funny how it asks if I'd like to replace /etc/master.passwd with the version from etc.tar.xz -- uh, no thanks, don't want to remove every user from my machine today 🤪
@mcc They come from https://static.redox-os.org/pkg/$arch/ (it’s the pkgar files). Annoyingly enough it’s only slow in the installer. Downloading them directly with curl is significantly faster, but I couldn’t figure out how to not re-download them in the installer. I saw there’s a new image from yesterday, so I might try that before I simply mirror the packages, and point the domain to a local webserver.
@schrotthaufen that sounds like a fileable bug, as if the installer is doing something wrong in its networking. I would file that
Man, what an economy. $500 million won't even buy you a Republican Congress anymore.
Why the fuck were the fridges at blood banks connected the internet?
What bumbling fool would do such a thing?

This. And document everything.
Force programmers to think further about how we design systems.
Provide context for those who don't have access to the creators' minds (including our future forgetful selves).
Corporate Democrats who have no intention of delivering progressive policy still hold power.
Democrats who indulged in bigoted rhetoric still hold power.
Democrats who ran against progressive candidates using right-wing talking points still hold power.
Democrats who support ICE still hold power.
98% of congress still takes AIPAC money.
Let this radicalize you.
We keep going.
@schrotthaufen hm, interesting. i wonder where the packages are being installed from… i also wonder what happens if you build the installer yourself, which lets you choose your initial package set, and i assume they come from local disk (because the package repo is just a bunch of toml files in a git repository)

anyone who is doing builds on machines where this is still the case (?): why do you hate yourself
cross-compilation exists
build on a fast machine, deploy onto the slow machine
(if there is a case where you can’t do this, I would be interested to hear it)
Re: "(if there is a case where you can’t do this, I would be interested to hear it)"
Sure, cross-compilation exists; Macross being perhaps my favorite named compiler for such things (the authors, paying homage to the Japanese animation series which kicked off in the 1980s).
OpenBSD developers AFAIK, tend to eschew cross compilation (unlike, say NetBSD) because sometimes bugs are found on the architectures using their own toolchains that are not otherwise encountered and it is absolutely worth remediating such things.
It also used to be a thing, maybe forgotten, decades ago, that worthwhile systems were typically "self hosting" to varying degrees, insomuch as for example: if I build an operating system, I can rebuild it, from source, and every piece, on the same system.
Many things? Have lost that. As far as I know, the L4 family of microkernels, for example, can only be built from other operating systems' and are not self hosting. That, to me, is deeply distressing. The sort of thing I imagine would have received failing marks in classes decades ago.
These days? A lot of software "engineers" seem to for example, test only in Chrome, and if it runs there? That's good enough for them.
I have, at one point in my career, been tasked with assisting teams involved in so-called "Software Escrow" where a build environment is essentially recreated down to the hardware, and then placed into a vault. Undertaking such tasks is nontrivial, and costly even for those which undergo such processes, and many more development processes never even begin to try to embark in such realms.
Reproducible builds are still a rarity in our field; and a more worthwhile goal.
Having the privilege of a fast machine, to deploy onto slow machines? Should be acknowledged as a privilege. Helping those with slower machines, be self sufficient, is a more benevolent objective.

Fortunately, there is a better way, for both makers and customers.
#Etsy has updated their Terms of Service that forces sellers to allow the use of their photographs, videos, and text to train #AI. There is no opt-out.
It seems bonkers to me that Etsy, a website which ostensibly sells human-made creations, is forcing sellers to enable AI to learn from and subsequently copy their own products. I guess they now feel that they have enough market share that people will not leave over this.

I'm not mad that Connie lost. I'm mad that our only two options were centrist Democrats. While the rest of the country is making progress, it feels like local politics, particularly the SF Democratic Party, are deeply influenced by corporate interests and billionaires.
@docpop it is disheartening.
