The watch cost me about $80. I wanted a Seiko mechanical dive watch, and this was the cheapest way to do it.
It died soon thereafter. I'd love to fix it. Or get it fixed.

Oh no, I “””””””accidentally””””””” bought too much candy for Halloween this year whatever will I do
As expected.
Our rough estimate is that this year’s #trickortreat was about 1,500 kids in two hours. This is an increase from last year’s ~1,200, but given the weekend night, pleasant weather, and some recent news exposure, it was somewhat expected. #halloween
Halloween day, quick update. I'll be back online tomorrow 🎃
Finished my household chores to-do list.
Put two flying ghosts up in our front yard tree.
Warming up by woodstove as family chicken dinner is cooking in the oven.
Continuing our family Halloween movies marathon.
Have a fun, safe & spooky Halloween night ✌️👻🧙♀️😱
@PhoenixSerenity You too! Cool hat! Sweet cat! 💀
ok it looks like alpha clip is really bad at sorting and making it explicitly discard as part of the fragment is literally the same thing but it goes through the opaque pipeline which means it gets sorted properly
remaining problem is that the shadow depth pass has wacky sorting and batching but I don't think I can fix that as easily

I have just learned about elect.horse, which is a fun game where you use totally above board tactics to make sure the horse wins reelection, independent from the popular vote!
(This honestly seems like the best possible way to get people to understand gerrymandering)
Happy Halloween 👻 🎃
Wouldn't it be funny if, after all the billions spent on republican campaigns, Americans voted for the Dems...
That'd be hilarious.

@benpate let’s just stop for a minute and maybe manifest them making something way better than office that makes Microsoft (even more) irrelevant 🤣
I’m all for it. How about a #Fediverse -wide search for Microsoft’s biggest strategic weakness?

Don't amplify disinformation!
Disinformation and rumors about the 2026 election are already in high gear will be getting steadily more intense between now and Election Day and in the post-Election Day stages of counting ballots, lawsuits, and certifying results.
So please, please, please, please, PLEASE ... don't help the people trying to undercut the elections by giving the rumors and disinformation more oxygen.
@McSquank My main memory of 1917 is that it was the last movie I saw in a theater before COVID hit the U.S. and everything shut down. But it was already running wild in other places, and I vividly remember thinking "should I really be here in a room full of people right now"

@Kalshann The phrase "not thinking things through" comes to mind...
...though it kinda came to mind even before alt-text was a thing here. Like... why have a limit? Are we just copying (the network formerly known as) Twitter? Literally no other social network ever had a post size-limit that small (to the best of my knowledge).
Fortunately, individual instance-owners can change it... [coughs quietly]
@woozle
True, though I suspect it might be erring on the side of caution for traffic? Or was done in anticipation of traffic? Not sure. You may be right.
I've not moved back to a small instance because I'm allergic to other people's drama and the first two instances went up in flaming drama so I am kinda hiding in among the herd of normies now. (Now I want a collective noun for normies?)

Why decentralization doesn't work for forums
I think federation and decentralization work well for email and text-messaging platforms like XMPP and Matrix because those platforms inherently benefit from being decentralized. They work almost seamlessly with federation.
Forums, on the other hand, don’t really need a federated system. Just look at Lemmy and how many communities defederate from one another because of ideological disagreements. When there’s that much defederation, the entire concept starts to feel pointless. Suddenly, you can’t use your account across “Lemmy” because several instances have decided they don’t like each other anymore.
If this much fragmentation is going to happen naturally, how is federation supposed to be the sustainable future of forums?
I think this is a fair criticism of federated forums. You don’t see this same level of fragmentation with email or text messaging.
Centralized but well-moderated forums are what really matter. Federation doesn’t protect good or useful speech, quality moderation does. And by its nature, Lemmy lacks that.
