@futurebird I have seen Barack Obama, the 44th president of America making companies for some people whom he wish to be leaders of the States!
Is Obama a socialist?And what do you say about this?
AND on the other hand,would American vote him if he could campaign for presidency again?
Obama is a liberal not socialist even a little. He won't run again.
@loke Just because you cannot use your own domain for email doesn't make it "not an alternative to Proton" for many people. It makes it not an alternative for *you* if that is what you require.
I would recommend emailing them about it, not because they're suddenly going to offer it when their website never stated that was among their offerings, but because perhaps they don't know that that is a deciding factor for some and they won't know unless you let them know. Perhaps if enough people email and it's not a big deal to them to start offering it, they'll change & add it.
As far as email with own domain, I have heard Fastmail and Migadu offer that, but since it's not something I require, it's nothing I've checked out thoroughly. I offer these names just to give you a place to start researching.
@ml right. That's why I said it was my fault for not investigating it before signing up.
Also, I'm not going to blame them for not being clear on the signup page. I didn't read all of the information anyway.
I will indeed contact them and ask if they have any plans to implement this. I'll share any response I might get. Thanks for the suggestion.
@2003MugishaPhocit cuddling several of our pet rams. 🐏

iPhone Duo, I’m finally in you!!!
@filmgirl.bsky.social welcome back!
"If the Democratic Socialists take over that is, like, the end of America."
- Peter Thiel
Essay Prompt: What does this statement suggest about the characteristics Mr. Thiel sees as foundational and essential to "America"?
@futurebird that would be amazing but even democratic socialists couldn’t buy back all the guns so I doubt it
@Tutanota @Miro_Collas @davidgerard
But at least you should be able to tell the user base if you encourage the use of AI by your employees or not. And if you allow the use of AI tools for sensitive work like implementations or designs?
And, that cannot be stressed enough:
By AI we mean generative AI.
@zeroday @Tutanota @Miro_Collas we don't have a policy of abject fuckery as yet, we're just exploring the possibilities of abject fuckery

Even more #ads are coming to #Google #search, Google says - https://mashable.com/tech/more-ads-are-coming-to-google-search-ai-mode I'm sure that will drive lots of traffic...
@glynmoody Enshittification?
So what happened, Eddie? I realise you've probably had a bajillion messages but would love to know if you don't mind sharing? X
hey Ben! I got a severe case of pancreatitis and was hospitalized for a week that was like a dream. a few days ago, I was declared well enough to enter a rehab program to relearn how to walk safely. kind of surprising, but a week of being bed bound. affected my ability to walk. rehab's going well and I'll probably be here another week or 10 days. :)
@algernon I have my own opinions, but I've done my fair share of debate.
Coming out and calling someone "mind-bogglingly stupid" probably isn't a great start to trying to win over hearts and minds.
Weather really jolly nice today. Bicycle at the ready. 🚴
A few years ago, I worked my way through Marx’s *Capital* (especially the first volume). That period was extremely formative for me, and it bothered me that almost every introduction seemed to be aimed at an academic audience. Since I’m not part of that group, I wrote an introduction for people like me that’s easy to understand. The introduction is in the public domain (CC0) and now has a new home:
In addition to the individual PDF, there are ready-made booklets you can print out and lay out—in case anyone likes them. In any case, I’m still very proud of the text to this day.
Boosts are appreciated!
“I’m anti-AI too, I don’t use LLMs for anything. But”
that’s adorable. I’ve been forced to use LLMs in my professional work or my ability to support myself financially would end. it was a horrid experience. it isn’t the reason why I hate LLMs, that vastly predates me being forced to use them under threat, but it gave me firsthand experience in how fucking backstabby and dishonest teams are when LLMs are used, and how much these things impact people mentally.
it’s great you have the privilege of not being forced to use this crap! some of us are knee deep in shit and we don’t want to be. I know you’re used to speaking for other people, but you sure as fuck don’t speak for me.
that’s why the 404 article about proton resonated with so many of us, while a lot of the privileged fuckers pretending at being anti-AI didn’t even notice it. we’ve all felt that type of abuse. we know what it is to know you’ll be fired if your company finds out you’re not onboard with this horrid crap.
#SciFi folks:
I am convinced that I have, at some point, read an interview with #IainMBanks where he expressed disdain for the idea of refusing to do a small good because it isn't a big good.
I would quite like to find the actual quote, but a variety of search attempts have failed to find any evidence of it.
Does anyone out there, like, just know?
Excerpt from a CPRE email today
Thank you for supporting a pause on unchecked data centre development until the government has a real plan for them. Thousands of other people agree with you.
There are many worrying impacts associated with data centres. They use up land and harm the environment. They’re incredibly resource-intensive. And all too often local communities aren’t getting a say. Applications in places like the North Devon UNESCO Biosphere and London's Green Belt suggest that the countryside is being earmarked for industrialisation.
Learn more about data centres....
https://www.cpre.org.uk/explainer/what-are-data-centres-and-why-are-we-asking-for-a-pause-on-them/
We’ve created this explainer to answer some of the questions you might have about data centres and the campaign we’re developing.
Data centres support our day-to-day digital lives. But new applications are coming in fast – largely to support the growth in AI. Some of the biggest proposals coming forward are in the countryside. They need to be planned smarter and better, and we know it can be done from some of the positive examples emerging in other countries.
But right now, with no dedicated rules for data centres, it feels like a free-for-all. We can’t afford to ignore the impacts. The government needs to come up with a plan now.
Together we can choose a different path for our countryside.
