@viq i have a colo box already that i pay $90/month for
Well that's the earliest I've ever lost the "Mariah Carey Christmas Challenge"...
Damn.
November 2nd and I just heard the song in public. Eesh.
@tinker 11/2 is early! My sister-in-law plays a similar game, but with Little Drummer Boy.

OK, so I don't use "Google" as a generic term for searching for things on the web. I usually say "web search" or similar.
But I use Duck Duck Go, and to say I "Duck Duck Went" for something is attractive, but unwieldy.
So from here on I think that when I do a web search I'll say:
"I DD Went"
(phonetically: Eye Dee Dee Went)
@ColinTheMathmo
That sounds like a toddler saying it went to the toilet. :)
(Sorry to rain on your linguistic parade, there.)

Have any of you decided to migrate away? If so, what did you try / where did you go?
I tried IVPN and like it as a replacement for Proton VPN, but for email and calendar, my two frontrunners (Tuta and Runbox) each have drawbacks.
@darkbeth @chema @Meznor Yes, I started something, using the hosting solution I have ( davidrevoy.com , hosted at OVH) , they have a built-in webmail service. I'm trying to setup first a simple redirection and keep my protonmail account for the two years (subscription was already paid, meh) to be sure no email points to it and work on it here and there, until everything will be migrated hopefully.
For a while, I was under the impression that all spiciness, or burning sensation in food flavoring, would come from capsaicin, the compound that causes it in chili peppers. Then I realized that Sichuan peppers are a quite different kind of heat. Wasabi (horseradish) is different yet again.
How many hot-flavored compounds are there? At least five!

Will go to bed less stupid.
Thanks !
🍂 Stray Kitten Report 9 (2/2)
Also, big news: we always thought the black cat who came with the kitten was the mother, until I finally could pet her, she raised her tail and... obviously a male.
Once Blacky (named for his coat, obviously) trusted me, the real mother, Grisouille ("little greyish one" in Fr) came out of the forest and joined. She had been hiding. Both are now very friendly.
I've contacted the vet, and we'll soon sterilize them all. A bit pricey, but we saved since Sept for that.
@davidrevoy The phrase "we'll soon sterilize them all" felt very sudden and jarring to me.
...
It switches the text flow from gentle respect, consent, trust building & individuals.
To cold, calculated, determined, action on aggregate.
Even if I understand reason ~ population control & worry for the future of kittens.
...
Come to think of it further, that is so because it is jarring for you too, isn't it?
@moira @ascentale @gbargoud is there a cargo bike you have your eye on that you'd get or haven't found something that quite fits the bill yet?
@fullywoolly @ascentale @gbargoud money hasn’t lined up yet. there are many options so there will certainly be something.
CiNEMercator - HAROLD AND MAUDE (Hal Ashby, 1971)
Released in 1971, at the height of Hollywood’s brief but extraordinary flirtation with the counterculture, Harold and Maude remains one of American cinema’s most peculiar romantic comedies.
Directed by Hal Ashby, whose understated anarchism would become a defining feature of the New Hollywood era, the film approaches death, love and social conformity with an irreverence that is both mischievous and unexpectedly profound.
Bud Cort plays Harold, a wealthy, death-obsessed young man who stages elaborate suicides to the indifference of his emotionally vacant mother. Ruth Gordon is Maude, a 79-year-old eccentric whose appetite for life extends to stealing cars, uprooting trees and disregarding most conventions of respectable society. Their unlikely romance reverses the usual assumptions about youth and age: Harold is prematurely exhausted by existence, while Maude has acquired, through considerable suffering, an almost radical capacity for joy.
Beneath its eccentric humour lies a precise critique of bourgeois respectability, institutional authority and the peculiar human talent for confusing propriety with morality. Ashby’s satire is sharpest when it is least emphatic; the military, the church, psychiatry and the family reveal their absurdities with very little assistance.
Cat Stevens’ songs lend the film a tenderness that occasionally borders on sentimentality, but Ashby’s dry comic timing keeps it largely in check.
Initially misunderstood by critics and audiences, the film gradually acquired its cult status. More than half a century later, its central provocation remains remarkably intact: that the art of living may have less to do with youth, freedom or happiness than with the courage to take existence seriously without taking its conventions seriously at all...

@anna are those toe shoes?
Rep. Hakeem Jeffries is far from perfect and far from terrible. Many people oppose the idea of electing him as the next Speaker of the House, but the Congressional Black Caucus can be expected to fight for this Black man to be the next Speaker of the House. This is a powerful argument in favor of Rep. Hakeem Jeffries.
@RonSupportsYou The issue of Jeffries becoming Speaker is much less consequential than Schumer becoming majority leader.
Airing the dog, Ilvy the dachshund needed a trip round the park but the vegetation was a bit confusing with elements of autumn but also flowers blooming (?)

Just finished up with the #repairCafe at the library.
I was main for bicycles and backup for laptop repair and Linux Install.
I managed to:
- tune a derailleur on one bike
- attach a kickstand to another
- swap out fresh tires and inner tubes for a third (and taught the family how to do and supervised them while they did the second tire!)
As backup for laptop repair, I helped diagnose and find a mitigation for a set or USB headphones/mic that was only pushing sound through one speaker.
I also met a lot of folks throughout town. Talked to some city organizers and officials. Talked to other groups and folks and had a great time.
The other repair stands besides my bicycle station were:
- A sewing and mending station
- An electronic / appliance repair station
- A historical preservation station
- A furniture repair station
- A laptop repair and Linux install station
- A kids section with coloring and activities
It was a good day.
@val @RGrunblatt and our server settings are restrictive :
- public timelines available to authenticated users only
- opt out of search engines
- require authentication from remote servers.
@mherrb @val @RGrunblatt Recent Mastodon allows to restrict /explore to show only local posts for unauthenticated users, which has curbed crawlers triggering remote media fetches into the cache greatly on our instance. Switching the landing page to /about instead of showing the feeds has also helped some, somewhat surprisingly.
Unfortunately, it's still impossible to restrict trending posts to authenticated users only.
I keep pointing to this small patch to Mastodon's rate limiter, which has closed another vector - bots forcing the loading of older remote posts, which then have their media re-fetched into the media proxy: https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/37987#issuecomment-3969147018
For our instance, I have extended the logic in that patch to also cover /tags and /explore paths for unauthenticated users.
Unfortunately none of the Mastodon issues about additional bot defense have gained any traction, and the larger instances seem to mostly not care.
@gael Speaking as someone who backed your initial kickstarter, who has purchased phones from Murena, and has a Fairphone 5 in my pocket running your OS today.
Your whole experiment has been to give people alternatives to big tech.
The market is sick of big tech shoving genAI into their operating systems, into their smartphones.
Your hearing from a whole lot of folks right now; who want an alternative from genAI.
WHY not capitalize on that market; that is obviously in your wheelhouse?
@trashheap @gael I was happily running e/os and liking it, and then they made it clear they were going in for AI, and now I’ve ditched them and they’re out of consideration.
