at a personal level, sure.
but social media influences society. we should want fedi to win because most people using platforms where a few billionaires decide what the public is regularly inundated with is corrupting. mass media has this problem too.
but decentralized social media can free us. widely used and integrated, the public could decide what we pay attention to democratically. revolutionary.
@wjmaggos Oh sure, yeah, you're not wrong.
But until the billionaires can control what gets said on the Fediverse, they're not going to pay any attention to it, so they're not going to push anyone to it, ergo it can't "win".
So I'll just carry on enjoying it for what it is, and not what we might ideologically want it to be.
You changed history, you ended the Trump era of politics, and you proved that power still belongs to We The People.
Thank you.
@cwebber Did nobody else vote for "biological brains on a chip"? What's that even supposed to mean? It's just so fucking dumb that it must be the next bubble! So basically the same as before but we need to sink lots of money into Nvidia again because as it turns out graphics cards are just the right tool for research here.... Again...
@TauPan I met someone at a conference who was very excitedly telling me that they were funding biological brains on a chip and that the prototypes were coming along

They’re not private at all, I’ve never been under the illusion that they were.
I like it, have some guts, stand on business. If people want to downvote they should be willing to attach their name to it, internet points are fake anyway.

Zero. Upvotes are a show of appreciation and I don't see why anyone would want that to be private. When it comes to downvotes, if you wouldn't want someone to know you downvoted something, you can't stand by that decision and so shouldn't have downvoted in the first place. Public reactions (alongside the self moderation features) keeps the fediverse honest and prevents the hostile type of downvote spamming you see on other platforms like reddit.

*deep bong toke* cuck porn confused me until i understood that this is a five dimensional chris nolan inception level chess move: you see, by placing an observer in the scene who is barred from participation, it is easier for the video consumer to forget that they are the original cuck, the cuck prime if you will. this strategy became necessary once simple eye contact with the camera was no longer enough.

Sąd Rejonowy Gdańsk-Północ, (...) postanowił (...) nakazać placówce przekazanie śledczym dokumentów, dotyczących sprawdzanych zabiegów -- czyli dokumentacja medyczna może trafić do rąk Kai Godek. (Kontekst: ten szpital to jeden z nielicznych, gdzie wciąż wykonuje się legalne aborcje.)
I’m updating the Small Technology Foundation site (and our other sites) in preparation of today’s mammoth Kitten release that’s taken me seven months to prepare and it’s quite lovely to refactor something you could previously only do in HTML (see the IDs and class name) into Markdown and have it just work. The whole reason for this crazy round of dev was to ensure that Kitten is as rock solid as possible as its the foundation of Catalyst and Meow. (This is just a little thing – Kitten’s an entirely different beast in terms of stability, consistency, and security than it was in April.)
PS. If you’re wondering about the <${FundUs} /> bit, that’s a Kitten component being instantiated in the Markdown. You can import them just like you can in JavaScript (and in the upcoming release, TypeScript) pages by including a script section in your front-matter.

Right… fingers crossed, barring calamity, I should start rolling out the Kitten update in the next few minutes.
Migrating servers from API version 0 to API version 1 is a manual process (from API version 1 onwards, it’s automatic, including across API versions, with full rollback) so I’m going to be updating our servers too afterwards.
I’ll make an announcement once I’m happy that everything is running smoothly.
(And then, hopefully go and celebrate at my big 5-0 birthday do this evening in Dublin with some good ’ol BBQ and drag queen karaoke.)
Never release on a Friday? But it ain’t a Friday, amirite? :)
🤞
Having a meeting about Amsterdam HoA’s today in what must be the most gorgeous spot to have a meeting in: The Royal Institute of the Tropics
(Yes we also have HoAs (VvEs), because of apartment buildings having to co-own shared parts of the building such as elevators)
@RYStorm Always find the differences in places interesting. Sounds like you have to have a VvE and membership tied to owning the flat. Seems like a very sensible system (it is not mandatory here so many places someone else buys the company that owns the shared building and so they run it at a profit rather than the flat owners deciding how it manage it).
@RonjaBiernat @JJHP3 yeah I just like to drop links because Internet search is trash these days, telling people to Google things is no longer a good idea
@skyfaller the link to the website really helps because I was thinking of contacting the creator to ask if i could make some posters/stickers :)

How private do you consider your votes in the Threadiverse?
From the technical side anyone can spin up their own Lemmy instance and view all votes, but I'm curious at what the community's perspective on how "private" that is. I think Mbin already shows upvoters? Piefed allows anonymous voting. I also know there are sites which show all voting history, but assuming those are fairly disliked.
My general questions to the community: - Do you expect your votes to be private, or just not shown in the UI? - Would per-voter votes showing up on another aggregator platform bother you, even though your instance already shares them with other servers?
For context I'm the dev doing some two way bridge interop between atproto + Threadiverse, in atproto the votes/likes are generally publicly accessible, you just look at the users repo through something like pdsls.dev, they're readable and archivable by anyone. In my opinion this isn't that big of a problem since it's fairly hard to look at and discern (Ex all my votes: https://pdsls.dev/at://did:plc:lmdkqemqrqnfiix72pyjhfey/social.coves.feed.vote). Ultimately trying to figure out if there's already a mutual understanding that they are public and we can just mirror them or whether they should stay hidden as an aggregate.
