US Election Day feels like it was a really big deal for the fediverse. I didn’t hear anything about Linux for about 20 hours.
Frances Ryan (Guardian) points out that Shabana Mahmood's 'partial' U-Turn does little to deal with the damaging effect her stance has on sectors that *actually* employ migrants.
The corrosive logic of 'contribution' may seem fair, but given the skewed pay structures of the UK economy will reinforce inequalities & more immediately undermine the ability of the social care system to function (dependent as it is on low paid migrant workers!).
despite being a sighted person i do indeed check alt text for things like "who the fuck is this guy in the video" or "whats the whole deal" or "what did he say at that bit where it was completely unintelligible" and all of them are all the same "video about thing" garbage. its almost like you like seeing the alt text badge more than the concept of alt text
Next week, on CBS All-Access Lieutenant Tyler gets stuck in a time loop though they ran out of the special effects budget and just solved everything with a meeting.
Rehtori roastaa Elsevieriä keskustelutilaisuudessa. Yliopisto harkitsee sopimuksen perumista niiden kanssa. Erinomaista! Se tekee uskomatonta voittoa ulkoistamalla kaiken työn tutkijoille ja keräämällä siitä voiton.

if the core is closed for the stated reason, does that mean you are unsure about the safety of the system?

Hi from normals.me. If you can read this, the federation works
This post is written on https://normals.me and delivered to !fediverse@lemmy.world over #ActivityPub, so if you are reading it the basic plumbing works. Now let me explain what is this.
Normals is a forum with communities, threads, and questions with an accepted answer. It is a single instance, not software you can host, and the core is closed for anti-abuse reasons. The federation module will be published separately with implementation notes (FEP-67ff).
What federates today Every community is a Group actor following the Lemmy model (FEP-1b12). Follow @selfhosted@normals.me or any other community from Lemmy, PieFed, Mbin or Mastodon.
Posts and comments go both ways. Replies from your instance appear in the thread on Normals, replies from Normals go back to the origin.
Remote content is labelled with its origin, links back to it, and is never copied. Media loads from the source.
Signed fetches, so it works with instances that require authorized fetch. NodeInfo 2.1 is up.
Policies, in case they matter to you, it has no ads, and no paid reach, and of course no AI training on posts. AI crawlers blocked by default, public mod log with reasons, and no automated removals. Numbers at https://normals.me/transparency so please take a look.
If something from your instance shows up wrong here, or something from here shows up wrong on yours, reply with the URL and I'll fix it. Andy Piper mentioned NodeBB uses the same group model, if anyone runs a NodeBB instance I'd like to test against it, if possible.
I hope we all have fun. Cheers!
A feature that the Fediverse has that other platforms often lack: untagging people from conversations who clearly aren't participating.
Use it.
I just had two random strangers discuss their personal finances in my replies which had nothing to do with my original post anymore. It's really annoying.
You have two options: stop doing that shit or get blocked. Your call.
@neauoire New Dune stills slap!

What a night for Democrats across the country. Voters showed up and delivered a blue wave like we haven’t seen in decades. This was a clear rebuke against a lawless, cruel President and his sycophantic party, and we should feel hopeful. More to come on The Big Picture this week. https://thinkbigpicture.substack.com/p/week-big-picture-november-4
