Anyway, PSA to no one in particular: sewing is an extremely, extremely useful skill to have, of PHENOMENAL usefulness, and it's a shame it's not respected as such (at least, not in the US -- and based on the extremely low value placed in sewing worldwide, probably a global thing). So glad the many folks here have pointed me in the right direction on this. And it's also a shame it's been pretty gender-role limited. (at least for me, a straight male...) I highly recommend everyone and anyone at least learn the basics (repair and some modifications), but if you're into math/puzzles/3d modeling/etc. it is a natural fit to go well beyond that.
@ai6yr I just dug deep into memories of lessons past and made the second French seam of my life. Followed by the discovery that I could turn it into a flat seam. And now it's like I'm possessed. Everything gets a French seam! Serged edges are for wusses.

... from adopting (perhaps with adjustments to suit our context, which is totally fine under libre) someone else's libre solution, to help fund other projects that make Aotearoa's systems stronger & more resilient. This is a model that extends to climate change mitigation. Imagine if we build software (or other tech solution) with open licenses, so they can be adopted a tiny cost (compared to proprietary offerings) by Pacific Island nations, & others in the developing south... Imagine.

Fediverse
Is there a way to not see duplicate of the same topic across different communities?
Hi everyone!
I’m really enjoying the Fediverse through Lemmy and Peertube.
Two creators I enjoy and follow on the Fediverse are Dash and Gardiner Bryant (both work on The Bryant Review) as their content is really enjoyable.
Sadly they are the target of my post as they shares their content on many different communities that I follow.
Today I had 5 times the same topic on RetroDeck (great project too) on my feed on Lemmy (Voyager).
It is the same on PieFed (Interstellar).
This is really annoying and I haven’t found a way to not show these duplicates. Do you know about one or is it worked on?
Also when crossposting, it would be great if everything appeared under on post. Is it feasible?
Sorry if it’s easy and I just missed it. In a way I hope it is because it would mean that the Fediverse is festure rich😇
Edit: Added Dash as she was in fact the one who published the article. Also it appears that the issue is only on mobile apps since both the browser of Lemmy and PieFed don’t have it.
Edit 2: Using the Progressive Web App of PieFed seems to have solved the issue for me
@dhd6 @Tree it could be that. The 12V battery has been an ongoing issue with this car.
I think we are on the 3rd now. The stock one died within a year. Notoriously bad.
The 2nd after-market one lasted 2 years. Now we are on another OEM model. If that is all it is (again) I would be relieved. Though it is still a $200 replacement 😭.
Have also seen some posts online that say a BMS software update made the issue go away as well.
So hopefully it is essentially nothing.
🤞
@seiz Would you mind filing an issue at https://feedbackassistant.apple.com? And reply with the FB number.

worrisome EV moment yesterday/today. Got home and plugged the car into our L2 (220V / 30A) Flo charger as I do almost every evening, but this time the charge didn't start.
I fiddled around to see if it was a setting on the charger or car, but to no avail.
It just would not go.
More concerning though was that when I went in the car and troubleshooted from the driver's seat there was a new "Check EV System" triangle I have never seen before (2019 Kona EV - 295k km). I unplugged the 12V battery in an attempt to reset the system.... no help.
I went to bed worrying....
This morning I took the venerable Toyota Prius C (2013 Hydrid - 275k km) to work. It has been sitting idle since the kids left last month so it needed a run. That at least was a good thing.
Called the Hyundai service dealer from work... This was a call I needed to make anyway as there is a service recall out for my model for a Battery Management System software update. Just got the letter last week. This seems too coincidental.... but I am probably being conspiratorial 😆
Anyway, the Dealer said to double check all three levels of charging to see if all, some or none, are working.
@Tree plugged in the Level 1 (120V/12A) trickle charger today and it seemed to be charging from there just fine.
And now I am at a Level 3 (480V/60A? DC) charger near home and it's working fine here as well. Currently charging at 54KW.
Ill get it up to 80% so I can go to work and back tomorrow and also try the Level 2 charger there. If it works there then it could be a problem
with my home charger.
No one said the new thing would be less worrisome than the old thing I guess.
I have an appointment on Friday. (all out of warranty by now obvs.)

Donc ben oui, tout le monde déteste la police parce que c'est une institution qui fait exception à tous les principes du service public français et qui agit en toute irresponsabilité.

@Lazarou The New York Times is a longitudinal study of the pervasiveness of Gell-Mann Amnesia.
There's nothing whatsoever special about them other than that they've been around for a long time. And there's nothing at all stopping people who recognize how bad they've gotten from simply ignoring them and patronizing better news sources.

Holy shit.
This guy takes a couple of minutes of audio from a security camera anywhere in the US, with no clues from the video whatsoever, and finds the exact spot where it was recorded.
How?

@scy I'm blown away enough by the cleverness of this method to comment, but also too blown away to know what to say.
Yikes?! Significant privacy implications here. 🤯
@ComradeSerena Unfortunately, I didn’t.
@majorlinux Aw, that's too bad. I'm curious to know exactly how they intend to build the socialist alternative. I read another article on this site and it didn't clarify that either.
In the Revolutionary Communists of America, our alternative-in-progress consists of a party of cadres, people well versed in theory, history, and organising. In the next revolutionary situation, people will spontaneously organise themselves into local assemblies, like the neighborhood committees in Minneapolis in January. If we build our alternative fast enough, then in the next revolutionary situation, there will be huge numbers of communists going to all of these assemblies and showing people the way forward. This is how the Bolsheviks guided the people of Russia to build the world's first socialist regime.
I wonder if this is what the PSL is doing, too. If it's not, I wonder what their plan is. They don't seem to have a very detailed one. Or at least they aren't presenting one, yet.
