After all the public backlash, the Proton CTO’s AI manifesto was published to Protons’s blog (presumably it was scheduled in advance, but still):
“The first is a change in engineering culture and engineer mentality. Your job has fundamentally changed. It is no longer to write code, and LLMs are not here to help you write better code faster. Your job is to help the LLM write better code faster.”
He literally wants his engineers to be reverse centaurs. @pluralistic
It works solely because corposcum are spineless collaborateurs.
The UK in contrast is a nightmarish police state where anything but compliance is indeed criminalized, has been for decades and where there are no such rights.

Oh apparently I've started looking for a CRT TV for the spare room again. So that's fun.
@stibbons You’re about ten years too late for mine, sorry, but damn it was a good one.
Harpo Roeder Breaks Down FUTO's Polycentric Protocol
Fascinating account, in LeMonde this morning, of the suicidal adoption of the neoliberal 'no-logo' business model by the French multinational Alcatel...
"In 2001, Serge Tchuruk, then CEO of the French telecoms giant Alcatel (at the time employing 150,000 people in 120 countries worldwide, a third of them in France, and with almost €25 billion in revenue), outlined his intention at a conference in London to turn the group into a "factoryless company"... the idea that companies should focus on what generates the highest margins: research and development, marketing, patent design, services and so on. The physical manufacturing of goods, which yields little profit but requires substantial capital and payroll costs, should be outsourced to low-cost foreign countries, especially China, which was at the time opening up to global trade.
"Despite warnings from labour unions and some economists, who describe it as industrial suicide, a threat to jobs and the abandonment of strategic expertise, financial markets at the time enthusiastically welcomed the announcement, and Tchuruk was named "Manager of the Year" by Le Nouvel Economiste. Other major groups followed Alcatel's lead: Pechiney, Thomson, Rhône-Poulenc, Renault and PSA parted with several factories and moved production abroad. In the "happy" era of globalization of the 2000s, France became less and less a country of producers and increasingly a country of consumers of equipment manufactured in Asia or Eastern Europe.
"This policy accelerated the deindustrialization of France, which had begun in the 1970s. From 2000 to 2020, the share of manufacturing in the country's GDP dropped from 16% to 10%, and France lost over a million industrial jobs. Between 2001 and 2004, Alcatel sold or closed more than one hundred factories worldwide – including in France – and laid off two-thirds of its workforce. By outsourcing manufacturing to third parties, the group lost control over quality, timelines and production costs. Gradually, Chinese subcontractors developed their own expertise, and Asian competitors adopted the opposite strategy by combining research and development with manufacturing. Outpaced by this cheaper and more responsive competition, Alcatel merged in 2006 with the American company Lucent, but losses and layoffs continued. In 2016, the Finnish company Nokia acquired Alcatel-Lucent, which then disappeared for good."
The digital detox industry is estimated to grow to nearly $8bn by 2035
Many of these companies are hoping to capitalize on gen Z’s growing weariness about the devices and social media platforms they grew up with. Nearly 60% of gen Z respondents identified as having a social media addiction in an April poll, and a third of the generation said they had deleted some of those apps, according to a 2025 survey.
The shift has also been driven by growing anger at tech platforms that have left some in gen Z feeling as if they are being exploited for profit.
Gen Z “was basically optimized for dopamine by very smart systems”, said Kenneth Schlenker, 39, a former product marketer at Google and co-founder of Opal. “But this generation is also realizing what they don’t want and are trying to change how the system impacts them.”

Interesting developments at the local tech community meetup today. The plan is to take all our online infrastructure underground, accessible via an invite-only wireguard virtual private network. Being exposed to the public internet is just too much cybersecurity & bot-busting drudge work for a volunteer org. I suspect a proliferation of many private internets will become the norm over the next year, based on trees of personal vouches similar to lobste.rs.
Well, this account will be going away, as deacon.social shuts down. I have gone around and around trying to switch to a new host. Mastodon refuses to recognize my password. When I recover password, it doesn’t recognize the new one. Written directions are useless. I apparently need someone to sit beside me and walk me thru the process.
So, I am officially pulling the befuddled old lady card. But, as of tomorrow, I’m out.
Hi there Laura, do you want support with each step?
I can't literally sit beside you of course, but I'm very happy to provide support one step at a time if you want?

I went back to Kubota Garden yesterday to photograph the twisted Japanese maple, this time from underneath, looking straight up into the canopy.
The bark was still wet from the rain, dark and smooth against the orange leaves. When I showed my wife this one, she said it looked like a sculpture.
I think she is right. It looks less grown than carved.
Do you see a sculpture in it, or something else?
I keep finding new shapes every time I look at it.

I was going through my old photo files and came across some old photos taken in 2019 of a temporary carriage by Kirkby Design. The installation was presented as part of 100% Design during the London Design Festival,
