Stretch break!
@bigzaphod Yeah, exactly. When I saw the first-run screen I thought it must not sync accounts and made a snap decision that I must need to sign in on each device.
If there is a way to immediately detect that sync data exists, it might be useful to throw up a dialog like “We noticed you’ve used Tapestry before. Please wait while it syncs.” and then list what the detected accounts are as soon as that information is available.
@dmnelson yeah unfortunately to find that answer still takes some time but I think it might be better if it threw up a spinner and said something like... "Checking iCloud..." or something for a moment until it knows the answer for sure one way or another before moving on. Then it can skip the onboarding (or not). The tricky bit is a user could be offline, iCloud could be especially slow that day, a totally new user won't have any data to find at all so it makes them wait for no reason, etc.
FWIW, a ballot mailed "Air Mail" and "Registered" from Tokyo Japan (less than US$8.00), arrived 10 days later in New Haven, CT.
US citizens have the right to vote _in the place they last lived_ (in my case, the town I redid grad school in after growing up and then mucking up grad school in the Boston area), and every state has different rules and fine print on how to vote. It ain't easy, but it is possible.
bus headbanging. not the best, but it's nice to get some snooze time
@fedicat I don't think it works for this case? technically $99 already feels cheaper than $100 🤣
@cheeaun Yeah normally I'd expect $99.99 but maybe that's too obvious. Anyway, I have to pay sales tax so it comes out to over a hundred.
@moira @coriander @apLundell @Taweret (I've never put a cig in my own mouth in my life, but some food still started tasting a lot different a few weeks into 1995...)
@Nentuaby @coriander @apLundell @Taweret _wow_ okay, that's really interesting! (Cloves and smokers and taste.)
I remember clove cigarettes being a thing with very hipsters but I don't know if that's related or not (and I just learned now that they got banned in 2009!)
I very much wonder how clove tastes different to smokers now. Because that's _neat_.
#RadicalRoutes is a network of radical #cooperatives working for "Homes without landlords. Work without bosses" with grassroots control and economic revolution through #cooperation.
The network is self organised through working groups and quarterly Gatherings. The next Gathering will be 14th – 15th November 2026 at Bidston Observatory Artistic Research Centre (BOARC) on the Wirral.
Gatherings are open to everyone but unfortunately this time the limitations of the venue can only accommodate delegates of member co-ops.
Everyone else is welcome to join us online.
- Other co-op members, associates and friends who want to participate in the network
- People from new or existing co-ops who are interested in joining
- Random other visitors or interested people.

Ah. Kdenlive is being dumb again.
There are tools to move the cache folders it uses, but they behave in really dumb ways.
Setting the "default location" for your Kdenlive installation does NOT change the "default folder" presented as an option when you open your "project settings". The latter is apparently unchangeable, and stuck in your "home" folder.
What's more, when you save your cache in a different location, it generates a hash name for the folder. This is apparently completely unchangeable afterwards.
So if you set it back to the default (home folder -- because the application default is basically completely useless, at least for already existing projects), then it bitches that the hash-name that it came up with "already exists".
"Well, yes, that was kind of the point, you idiot machine. I wanted to re-consolidate my cache files."
So it jumps back to wherever it was before.
I'm sure there's a way to fix this by directly hacking the project file.
I'd file a bug in the bug-tracker, but the bug-tracker is currently throwing 500 HTTP errors, and has been for months.
I get notifications in my email about bugs I was following, but I can't see them because I get server errors when I follow the link in the email. Can't complain, because it's a no-reply email address.
What are y'all doing here, guys..?
Going to bed. I'll screw with this thing tomorrow. I'm sure there's some way to force it to behave.

How did those great Semisonic hits get written?
https://www.guitarworld.com/artists/guitarists/dan-wilson-semisonic-closing-time-secret-smile
'Semisonic has had a very adventurous year. John had a stroke 18 months ago and has now recovered well enough to be able to play the bass. So, we put him – and me and Jake – to work recording our latest single, Don’t Give Up Yet. It’s dedicated to my people in Minneapolis and their heroic actions supporting and protecting their neighbors against the ICE invasion.'

Lets be fair, no woman can make a guy have an affair…
The real praise goes to Ethan Klein, for taking down Ethan Klein. Best thing he ever did.
Much like Jimmy Carr’s old joke. You can say a lot of bad things about Hitler, but you have to admit one accomplishment that if anyone else did it it would be considered such a good thing that it can erase almost anything bad… He killed Hitler.
According to the project's GitHub page, Mabel, Clover and Hazel are the hens, Rufus escorts Clover and Bramble is the lone drake, and they spend about 40% of their time feeding, 30% resting and 15% preening. Throw peas and the nearest ducks notice first and call out, then race from pea to pea. One commenter asked for the hard ceiling of 120 peas to go away. A duckling that strays more than 4 meters from its mother stops and peeps until she calls it back.
The sound is the wild part.
The README says the quacks model the duck's syrinx and vocal tract, with the formants following the bill as it opens on "qu-" and closes on "-ck." On Hacker News, where it drew 164 points, celphase wrote that it was made with significant LLM use (they'd credit Claude as a co-contributor if they could), running the LLM in a loop to bring the output's spectrogram closer to a real recorded sample. They added that a classification model marked the synthesis as more duck than the real duck sample.

Not everyone was fooled. One commenter said it doesn't fool the Merlin Bird ID app on their iPhone.
If you try it, I'd put on headphones and turn on its headphone mode, since the README says each ear gets its own delay from a model of a human head. One commenter found it very relaxing in the background, and another said it works very well as white noise. It's free, under the MIT license, and the code is on GitHub.
Bring peas.
The Duck Pond synthesizes every quack live, and you can throw the ducks peas...
A developer who goes by celphase built The Duck Pond, a web page with a small flock of mallards on it: three hens, two drakes and two broods of ducklings. There isn't a single recording in it. Every quack is synthesized as it happens and heard from where you stand on the bank, and one button throws them a handful of peas.
The ducks have names and routines.
