The Productivity J-Curve explains why PCs and the internet took years to deliver measurable economic gains.
Some argue the same applies to AI. But not every technology eventually delivers its promised payoff. Remember enterprise blockchain?
Outside of coding, how can we tell whether AI is different?
@carnage4life Ok, but "Enterprise Blockchain" is only good as an example to show that LinkedIn thought leaders are not really useful indicators. There was obviously never a "there" there.
An immutable ledger is a useful concept, but not revolutionary in itself. Permissionless systems work only for global currencies (and we already have one), and then not very well.
A "permissioned blockchain" is just a database and a CA in a trenchcoat, with a couple of extra layers of complications noone needs.

some feedback about Lemmy/PieFed from Reddit users
I’ve tried both [Lemmy and PieFed], and the UX is incredibly unintuitive and unpleasant. The main problem is that it’s quite hard to discover content you want while avoiding content you don’t, Bluesky at least has really good custom feeds that are easy to add (the default feed sucks). Another big issue is the general site layout, it’s hard to figure out how to do things as simple as saving a post for later or how to go back to the feed without being redirected back to the post I’m trying to exit.
Maybe they didn’t see the “Feeds” feature in PieFed? The top navigation menus in PieFed are a bit messy. Although shareable blocklists could be cool too, or maybe toxic?
That’s excluding the horrible lack of contrast most frontends use, which makes reading and parsing the site elements unnecessarily difficult (no Lemmy, grey text on a grey background is not good for readability).
I like the Lemmy colors, but maybe it should be easier to change, because they might like the darkly-pureblack theme.
Fediverse feels slower, but not in a good way. More of a ‘if I don’t use this for a week, I’ll see new things’. If I log in after 2 or 3 days, I’ll scroll for 10 minutes and see the stuff I saw last time.
Maybe this is a UX issue of not finding the right feed they would like.
I also want nsfw stuff now and then. I hate how censored the internet has become, at least with reddit if I want to see a bit of porn, I can.
Again maybe a UX issue of not presenting what communities they could subscribe to.
I tried twice to join those forums within the Fediverse and I can’t get past the captcha test. The fact that you need approval to validate your access doesn’t seem designed to encourage you to recommend it.
The captchas on Lemmy are AWFUL, I can’t do them either.

(that’s the “Medium” difficulty)
Lemmy v1.0 is adding the ability to do invites, so maybe there will be an invite-only instance that gets some momentum, that could be cool. Invite sites seems like a cool old-internet type of culture.
The fediverse stuff is way too complicated for me, Reddit is very easily accessible and actually has active communities for the topics I’m interested in.
Of course these are naturally going to be all negative because they’re users that bounced off the Threadiverse, but there’s probably hints to what can be improved
@jap That sounds like a dumb GPT. Which model did you use? I ran your photo through Claude Opus with a very simple prompt and it got the number correct right away, and pointed out that the smallest cog of this cassette isn't in the picture and thus can't be assessed.
@quincy Feel you. Same here 😓
@Isabelle_Vannier Thanks, it means a lot to me to hear from others feeling the same way.
Live vocal production is a hot topic lately so... let's learn how that works and have some fun with Cyan! ✨

This bothers me a lot. The inroads of this cult into the institutions worry me.

You know how the identity to addition is 0, like 2 0 + is 2. Then, on top of that, you have the identity of multiplication that is 1, 2 1 * is 2.
Okay, so, add 0, mul 1, now. Is there an identity somewhere that is 2? Serious question, I've been scratching my head on this for a good 15 minutes and I'm drawing a blank. It's not pow, and it's not square.. It might be a stupid question, if it is, please do tell me it's stupid.
@neauoire Hmm, for a "obvious" extension of the 0 & 1 identities, I'm reminded of the idea of log probabilities https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Log_probability (which I had used, like, a lifetime ago)
So if we have a mapping
f (x) = log₂ x = lg x,
where f : R⁺ → R⁺; this will give
f (x ⋅ y) = f (x) + f (y) = lg x + lg y.
We can then consider a binary operator ⁑ such that
f (x ⁑ y) = f (x) ⋅ f (y) = lg x ⋅ lg y
which yields
x ⁑ 2 = 2 ⁑ x = x.

@neil
Well, at least now we live in the future.
@dajb Yes, literally any situation.
I'm not sure which specific of the EU legislative documents this is stated in, but it all leads back to human rights in the end, which are pretty foundational to the EU as a whole. You cannot be excluded from participation in public life because you don't own a particular item.
@jens Again, I agree. But practically, how is that going to work out?
Users are currently at 0.01% of the installed user base. That 0.01% is itself fragmented between Sailfish, Nura, GrapheneOS, etc.
So let's say that they decide to support those. Then someone comes along saying "I've adapted BeOS for mobile. Me and my three mates are using it and not to support us is discrimination."
Where's the line here?
Someone recently said to me that AI means we’re the cows of the future and I had no idea what it meant.
I just looked it up and I guess we’re cooked. 😂
@carnage4life
Cows of the future....
~BTW!~ We can just turn off this shit by pulled the plug from the socket
I could be the first person ever to discover roast parsnips with pesto. It's unlikely but not impossible. You'd never know, would you? You just don't think to question this sort of stuff. Maybe not that because it's quite obvious - I assume other people think to pair things that start with the same letter. Like wearing pink pyjamas and smoking a pipe. Pouring a pitcher of Pimms into a piano. It's the most natural thing in the world. But perhaps not....... Grapes with...... Sriracha. Because that would be fucking mental. Or...... New TikTok trend? You are literally never going to believe this.... Looked it up and it is genuinely a viral TikTok trend. God and irony are dead dead dead. Is it ironic? (don't you think?) I genuinely believe we have at least one original thought in each of us. Let's do it now. Think of one thing that is entirely original. You can do it. I'd give you some pointers but we only have all of current human knowledge to draw from, which invariably leads us to thoughts that have already been thunk. We need new ways. New paths to follow. Or maybe not even paths. But to step through a doorway to another way. Become a helicopter blade and slowly rotate off into the atmosphere - change up our perspective to come up with a never-before thought thought, liiiiiike.............. A collapsed star trapped in a soap bubble, impossible symbiotic physics - a perfect structure. Equal pressure containing all of the force within a gossamer thin shell. True natural beauty. Finally understanding, delivered as a physical metaphor. The saviour of our human condition, bootstrapping the next phase of our evolution. We are all collapsing stars, and only the fragile nature of soap holds us back from imploding and taking out the whole fucking neighborhood. Is this a new thought? I feel dangerously close to something. What would we evolve into? Ha-HA! It's a trick! We'd go BACKWARDS into monkeys. Monkeys are the ideal form. We'd just smash the shit out of our smartphones and go and live up a tree. Checking each other for nits and chewing on some grass. Ocassionally just having a lovely big scream. I long to be a monkey.
I think bonobos seem chill and nice, and would be a good choice to deevolve into, and as you say their existence, sans the presence of humans anyway, in the forest is likely a good deal more pleasant than that of the average human right now.
Another variant of this mistake is thinking "Microsoft did X" or "Apple did X" while assuming that each company is some kind of Borg-like superstructure that thinks with one mind. This is so far from the truth if you've actually worked inside a big tech company that it's laughable.
IME every company is at war with itself and you can find fiefdoms, alliances, rebellions, etc. It would be like thinking that New York City or Switzerland thinks with one mind.
