AI is a technofascist project built on pillaging the commons to facilitate a wealth transfer to the ultra wealthy. it is not "just a tool" unless you're somehow immune to moral injury and prepared to completely disregard the political, ethical, and environmental aspects of the thing
I'm doing a full backup of my laptop this evening so I can replace Debian with Gentoo.
Gentoo has a good statement against LLM-generated code, citing the licensing issues, but more importantly, the ethical issues.
That doesn't free me from what's happened to the Linux kernel, but it's not a question of purity, it's a question of active opposition.
Admittedly, a point in favor of Gentoo is that I booted up a live USB and got a graphical desktop and wifi, which wasn't the case with NetBSD or OpenBSD. I might use those on headless systems, after I get my laptop sorted out.
I know the user for a touchscreen laptop, it's my wife, who had an HP Envy with touch screen running Windows 10 and found that on particularly unwell days, clicking by touch was just fine.
her current is a non-touch HP Elitebook (also Win10) and I asked and she would quite like a touchscreen laptop again. hardest part would be finding one that does Win10 and doesn't require Win11 if you have specific cause to run Windows.
so don't say there's no use case for a touchscreen laptop. instead, say the current ones are shit.
EDIT: linux advocates who are about to essay "why don't you just" should just fuck off right now
@davidgerard yeah, I have an old touchscreen laptop and it's a nice feature to have. Not massively useful, but all things being equal I'd rather have a touchscreen than not, and yeah, it's good as a drawing tablet — currently I have an iPad for that and it's a pain to get the files off it given I don't have a Mac
I can see right up your nose II
@llamasoft_ox He looks like he's about to sneeze 😅
@rnd …austro-bavarian is not a dialect of german in my opinion, but this is controversial among linguists
@_r oh, sorry
but i do hope it gets some kind of official recognition or promotion in schools in austria, because right now, it seems as if the government and state institutions and the media treat it more as "spicy german" :-(
@kauer @WeirdWriter as an available feature available to you to turn on is fine I guess, but enabling it by default and suggesting people who might want to preserve original behaviour hates fun is something else.
It sure tells us a lot about the people in charge over there. There is an assumption that they own the ecosystem and the site owners are just users.
left a guitar Mass after 20 minutes (not out of disrespect, just out of a massive fear that I'll shit myself)
@davidgerard@circumstances.run As a current HP Envy user, I feel like touch screen laptops are only good if you can fold them back fully to turn them into tablets
@axel this was a 15" and quite heavy, so it really wasn't tabletable
@hbons heck yeah, that's my favourite one! 🧡🧡🧡
@sean_earle will add it next stream!

can anyone help me identify this plant?
the whole plant (no flowers right now) looks superficially similar to the cow chervil that also grows here, but the leaves are like this:
I can take more pictures, also of the stem, later.
@sean_earle seems it does exist, I just missed it because it's all on its own: U+1F9E1 🧡

DALÍ por DON RAMÓN GÓMEZ DE LA SERNA
@PseudoNovalis what a find, Gómez de la Serna writing about Dalí with that red pomegranate creature on the cover

@davidgerard They're also useful for artists who want to draw on their laptop as a lightweight alternative to an artist's tablet. Honestly, it's not bad.
@Rhube i was considering a Surface Go at one point (a 10" tablet that was literally a PC and would apparently Linux quite well) but i knew she'd nick it for precisely that
@dskywalk nice, I need to fetch the thing from the car and try it out!
@dskywalk updater worked like a charm! None of my Master System ROM seem to start, I'm not sure if that worked before. I have to take a deeper look at the ROM files...

Not every message the activitypub can send is suitable for every platform. Reddit style discussions just don’t map to Mastodon.
false. lots of content would fit on both mastodon on lemmy. example post below:
Gaming Night tonight at Augsburgstraße 3, Neues Teehaus, Berlin.
There will be Nintendo games (or Boardgames or whatever) and KüFa.
Everybody is Welcome to Join.
this can be posted on mastodon (from somebody who lives in berlin) or on the threadiverse in the /c/berlin community. it would fit both audiences equally well.
You misunderstood me. It’s not that the content is not relevant. It’s that the threaded discussion style just doesn’t map to Mastodon. Technically they can talk to each other but practically there is no sensible way to display the info on Mastodon.
The activitypub protocol that powers the fediverse is very versatile. So versatile that not every message can sensibly be displayed by every implementation.
Example: Mastodon does not support downvotes, lemmy and peertube do. In lemmy the descussion belongs to a group entity, in Mastodon everything belongs to a person entity.
Both are valid implementations of the spec but they use different parts of it that are relevant for them.
