@rmi What can I say but *yikes*
@aurynn in fairness, cache invalidation IS deceptively complicated

Good question, however the security model doesn't depend on the code being secret, and it shouldn't. The auth, signatures, permissions and input handling are standard and went through an OWASP review before launch.
What's closed is the anti-abuse layer, spam, rate-limit tuning, the signals for detecting ban evasion and coordinated accounts. Those work partly because spammers don't know the exact numbers. Lemmy's and Mastodon's are public and they get played for exactly that reason. Hope it helps :)
This makes sense, but that doesn’t stop release of the source code. You just make the security stuff a module or plugin of some kind that is not released.
Thus I could spin up a Normals instance, run it, have people on it, but I’d need to make my own spam filter.

This seem to stem from a misunderstanding. Lemmy and Mastodon have different goals. Users of each generally don’t want the other’s content generally showing up en masse.
If you want to see something from Mastodon, you can usually get it on Lemmy, and vice versa. I don’t often see Mastodon posts either, but that’s because I only follow Lemmy communities, so I only see them when someone on Mastodon tags a Lemmy community in their post. If you want to see more Mastodon content, see if you can follow some users or hashtags from Lemmy.
But that might not be supported; I haven’t tried. If you prefer Mastodon, I’m pretty sure that you can follow Lemmy communities from there.
Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro expressed interest Saturday in joining the National Popular Vote Compact for the Electoral College.
After gaining full power in 2026, Dems just need to pass the compact in PA, MI, and two of AZ, NV, and WI to give it the majority of electoral votes needed to activate

It's a shame you see it this way, Andy Piper disagrees but you're free to think as you wish, it's an open forum :)
no one should trust us for a long time
@susankayequinn No trust for America until there has been accountability for breaking the law, new laws to prevent this kind of thing from ever happening again, restoration of funding for things like USAID and supporting Ukraine properly - there's no way to make up for the loss of life of course - and Republicans slithering back under their rocks. Plus not blowing this opportunity for real change for the positive.
Hmm, possible rain coming up in SoCal
NWS Los Angeles (11/7/26)
"...As for the potentially upcoming storm, there is a high likelihood
of some amount of rain between the 12th and the 17th (and beyond).
Forecast models are struggling to resolve how the broad ridge
this week will break down, allowing for one or more troughs of
low pressure to shuttle moisture and instability into the region.
The is the chance for a significant storm system with periods of
heavy rainfall, though some model solutions indicate only light
rain and minimal storm totals. Clarity on the time period when
rain will be the most likely is increasing, latest models runs
highlighting Sunday into the following Tuesday (Nov 15-17th)...."
and if that weren't enough, one of my cats just farted
@fluffy Oh gods, my condolences.
Breaking News: Senate Candidate Scott Colom (D-MS) Refuses To Back Chuck Schumer For Majority Leader
Ask whether he would support Chuck Schumer for Senate majority leader, Scott Colom says, "My concern about leadership from the Democratic Party is too many of our leaders are from the same areas of the country."
@mastodonmigration I agree. They all live in Florida

We're interested in opening up our instance a little bit to Fediverse power-users who want to help us dogfood #Bonfire. The environment seems to be mostly stable, but we're currently running on latest alpha / beta branches, so Here Be Dragons.
If you're interested in jumping over to a new instance and using it exclusively for a while, feel free to DM me for an invite!

Australians who have hybrid office/WFH arrangements: How do you do telephony? Work-issued mobile? Work-issued computer with soft phone app? BYOD with a work app? BYOD with your personal number? Don’t do voice telephony? Boosts OK.
@futzle
I do have a work mobile as I am on overnight support and I didn't want my personal phone ringing in the middle of the night, also I didn't want my personal number available to people at work unless I specifically gave it to them. I barely know it, why should other people?
When I (re)joined in 2021 desk phones at the work place were already a thing of the past. They appear to have become extinct somewhere between 2018 and 2021.
Most "calls" to other work people are via Zoom (preferred by me) or Teams
And there we have it, as anticipated. Like clockwork, after saying 19x he would never ever work with Opportunity, Luxon now says that of course he'd work with Opportunity, and that there needs to be "more cross party collaboration".
