PSA: Have you heard the good word about Progressive Web Apps?
Like a web app, nothing to install. Lives in your browser tab. Cannot install toolbars or viruses or malware outside the tab.
Like a native app, you own your data. It lives in your browser tab.
Like a native app, can be completely offline. Just host it on a server somewhere as static files, load it in a browser tab. Now you have it cached on your machine, it won't expire.
The only caveat: it _can_ exfiltrate your data in the browser tab. Go forth and share small PWAs with no dependencies that are easy to inspect with eyeballs.
(People who know more, please correct/educate me. I have been utterly oblivious because every PWA I've ever seen has been the lousy kind: some Principal Agent trying to insinuate themselves into your habits, constantly call back to their servers, keep their grubby paws in your data, using a bazillion dependencies to guarantee they lose control of their supply chain and your data. Please also share all the good PWAs I have somehow never encountered.)

How private do you consider your votes in the Threadiverse?
From the technical side anyone can spin up their own Lemmy instance and view all votes, but I'm curious at what the community's perspective on how "private" that is. I think Mbin already shows upvoters? Piefed allows anonymous voting. I also know there are sites which show all voting history, but assuming those are fairly disliked.
My general questions to the community: - Do you expect your votes to be private, or just not shown in the UI? - Would per-voter votes showing up on another aggregator platform bother you, even though your instance already shares them with other servers?
For context I'm the dev doing some two way bridge interop between atproto + Threadiverse, in atproto the votes/likes are generally publicly accessible, you just look at the users repo through something like pdsls.dev, they're readable and archivable by anyone. In my opinion this isn't that big of a problem since it's fairly hard to look at and discern (Ex all my votes: https://pdsls.dev/at://did:plc:lmdkqemqrqnfiix72pyjhfey/social.coves.feed.vote). Ultimately trying to figure out if there's already a mutual understanding that they are public and we can just mirror them or whether they should stay hidden as an aggregate.
@jfmezei the autobody guy didn't know anything about car charging :-)
@chris Ah ok. Body shop instead of car doctor !
BTW, in New Zealand, "body shops" are called "panel beaters".

Zero. Upvotes are a show of appreciation and I don't see why anyone would want that to be private. When it comes to downvotes, if you wouldn't want someone to know you downvoted something, you can't stand by that decision and so shouldn't have downvoted in the first place. Public reactions (alongside the self moderation features) keeps the fediverse honest and prevents the hostile type of downvote spamming you see on other platforms like reddit.
Are we supposed to be thoughtful with our upvotes and downvotes? I’ve just been going ham as I please.

zero, it’s on the internet, it:s not “private”
“As a functional ban on social media for youth under 16, AB 1709 cuts young people off from essential information and experiences, silencing the very voices it claims to protect,” EFF's Rindala Alajaji said in our press briefing, as @TechCrunch reports. https://techcrunch.com/2026/11/05/meta-google-and-tiktok-sue-california-ag-over-teen-social-media-law/
@eff I can't find my earlier toot right now, but I remember ranting about Insta supporting age verification - even placing poster ads in my home town - my take was: they'd crave to misuse this feature to get government confirmed ID to add to their ad data...
And I still want big tech regulated. That's why we have the Digital Services Act, or other laws aimed to protect our children. 🤷♀️

Government must move away from toxic social media platforms | Open Rights Group [Video]
We shouldn’t be forced to use toxic platforms that track and profile us in order to get public information.
Platforms such as Facebook, Instagram and YouTube track and profile their users so that they can target advertising towards them.
Their business models fuel online harms by pushing more and more extreme content to users. Despite this, these platforms are one of the primary ways that government departments share public information.
Tell your MP to support the EDM calling on the UK Government to ensure that all public sector social media content is published on open, decentralised and federated platforms!

something that comes up a lot when i talk about fat liberation: this is not about if you, personally, are attracted to fat people. it is not about "well someone might find you attractive some day" it is not about fishing for attention or compliments. it is about basic human rights and dignity such as the workplace, access, medical bias and neglect, etc

Hi from normals.me. If you can read this, the federation works
This post is written on https://normals.me and delivered to !fediverse@lemmy.world over #ActivityPub, so if you are reading it the basic plumbing works. Now let me explain what is this.
Normals is a forum with communities, threads, and questions with an accepted answer. It is a single instance, not software you can host, and the core is closed for anti-abuse reasons. The federation module will be published separately with implementation notes (FEP-67ff).
What federates today Every community is a Group actor following the Lemmy model (FEP-1b12). Follow @selfhosted@normals.me or any other community from Lemmy, PieFed, Mbin or Mastodon.
Posts and comments go both ways. Replies from your instance appear in the thread on Normals, replies from Normals go back to the origin.
Remote content is labelled with its origin, links back to it, and is never copied. Media loads from the source.
Signed fetches, so it works with instances that require authorized fetch. NodeInfo 2.1 is up.
Policies, in case they matter to you, it has no ads, and no paid reach, and of course no AI training on posts. AI crawlers blocked by default, public mod log with reasons, and no automated removals. Numbers at https://normals.me/transparency so please take a look.
If something from your instance shows up wrong here, or something from here shows up wrong on yours, reply with the URL and I'll fix it. Andy Piper mentioned NodeBB uses the same group model, if anyone runs a NodeBB instance I'd like to test against it, if possible.
I hope we all have fun. Cheers!
@ajroach42 I love that Toei just licensed Spider-Man & made whatever they wanted. Giant jaguar robot, sure why not? But it just reminds me how annoying I find Peter Parker.
@mdhughes it's the best spiderman
