They’re not private at all, I’ve never been under the illusion that they were.
I like it, have some guts, stand on business. If people want to downvote they should be willing to attach their name to it, internet points are fake anyway.
50501 Coalition is supporting Chris Van Hollen for Senate Majority Leader!
Chuck Schumer is too complicit in the Trump administration’s crimes & the billionaire class to lead. It’s time for the Democratic Party to embrace a new generation of progressive leadership, & that starts with Senate Majority Leader.

How private do you consider your votes in the Threadiverse?
From the technical side anyone can spin up their own Lemmy instance and view all votes, but I'm curious at what the community's perspective on how "private" that is. I think Mbin already shows upvoters? Piefed allows anonymous voting. I also know there are sites which show all voting history, but assuming those are fairly disliked.
My general questions to the community: - Do you expect your votes to be private, or just not shown in the UI? - Would per-voter votes showing up on another aggregator platform bother you, even though your instance already shares them with other servers?
For context I'm the dev doing some two way bridge interop between atproto + Threadiverse, in atproto the votes/likes are generally publicly accessible, you just look at the users repo through something like pdsls.dev, they're readable and archivable by anyone. In my opinion this isn't that big of a problem since it's fairly hard to look at and discern (Ex all my votes: https://pdsls.dev/at://did:plc:lmdkqemqrqnfiix72pyjhfey/social.coves.feed.vote). Ultimately trying to figure out if there's already a mutual understanding that they are public and we can just mirror them or whether they should stay hidden as an aggregate.
@perdidonavida well, I'm not doing it because it would probably involve at some point running an LLM. I would consider saying "you should try it!" but I think that would constitute in writing encouraging someone to commit a crime so I'm not going to say that
@mcc Is it ethical to use llms to prove there are problems with the use of llms? That's a great question. I'm inclined to try such things, but I admire your position.
Anyway, if someone reading this thinks it's worth trying and wants some help, maybe we can work together. I will say in advanced that there's a serious stretch of scientific ethics here that should be well evaluated before, that might make the idea not viable at all

No idea. I don’t like public voting and only do it on rare occasions. I was doing it a lot to get rid of things from my feed but rimu put in a read button so now Im back to almost never doing it.
“Rimu” being the creator of Piefed (which is also part of the Threadiverse) for anyone who doesn’t recognize that name.

Government must move away from toxic social media platforms | Open Rights Group [Video]
We shouldn’t be forced to use toxic platforms that track and profile us in order to get public information.
Platforms such as Facebook, Instagram and YouTube track and profile their users so that they can target advertising towards them.
Their business models fuel online harms by pushing more and more extreme content to users. Despite this, these platforms are one of the primary ways that government departments share public information.
Tell your MP to support the EDM calling on the UK Government to ensure that all public sector social media content is published on open, decentralised and federated platforms!

@jeridansky I had seen that a year or so ago, but I have continued to shop there as I like to support makers who have no other way of reaching the public. I decided that was a trade off I was willing to make. :)
@nomdeb Are there any shops you specifically recommend for shawls — ones you've bought from so you know the quality is good?
I'd guess they're at least vaguely aware (it's been in the news), not that you're wrong. Ppl should contact them in advance.
I'd think campaign HQ, but I saw someone else said they had bad luck there.
There is a House/Capitol switchboard. I see the number go around from time to time. There's a number at the bottom of this page:

On Lemmy? As others have said, they’re automatically federated and so anyone can see them.
On Piefed though? I have a user setting where I can choose whether my votes federate and I can override that default on a given post if I choose with a hot key. That’s how it should be. IMHO, more of y’all should use Piefed.
Microsoft spent $5B less than planned last quarter because its outsourced AI data centers weren’t ready.
Now IREN reports more delays, while Microsoft is winding down its Oracle deal because the GPUs no longer meet its needs.
Data center capacity is now the obvious weak link of the AI boom.

I find the islam idea that the devil (Iblis) is made of the same "stuff" as the human ego absolutely fascinating. In a way, this makes the human ego, and the associated sins of pride and arrogance, a reflection or representation of the devil.
Philosophically speaking, that's a very intriguing concept.
(I'm probably getting details wrong here and I don't know how widespread this idea is among muslims, so please don't make any assumptions based on this. It just makes me frustrated that my education didn't include more exploration of faiths other than Christianity. I'm absolutely not religious, but that doesn't mean there aren't lessons to be learned from and interesting philosophies to be found in various holy scriptures.)
@thomholwerda not trying to be the ‘well akshualy’ guy, but as a Sunni Muslim, I’ve never come across the notion that Iblis is made of the same “stuff” as the human ego.
The mainstream belief is that Iblis was a Jinn (made of fire), and humans are made of clay.
Iblis’ downfall was because he refused to prostrate before Adam because he thought he was superior due to being made of fire. So his ego/arrogance is what is seen as one of the worst traits that a human can have.
