This memory popped into my head after reading about the long-overdue end of the Tesla DumpsterCar era:
Years ago, I tried to throw away a trash can.
I turned it upside down, and it was righted by our helpful trash handlers.
I stacked it on top of another can, and it was carefully placed next to it after emptying.
I finally put a sign on it which read "This is garbage".
The next day the sign was replaced by another one which read, "Yes, we know."

Do you know I'm really thinking about getting a cybertruck
@TheBreadmonkey I'm going to need a urine sample and a cognitive skills test result

@tonyarnold I… may or may not have a plush Rust crab toy at home. I wouldn't say if I had.
But where do I park my submarine..
@stux that escalated quickly.
Hmm, estate sale ad. My interpretation is that the person here was an attorney, had no hobbies, and spent their entire life working, and thus the estate sale will be boring and not worth it. (because, no hobbies).
Dear non-crafters.
Please stop suggesting that hobby crafters who do things simply for the love of it start selling their work. It is not the compliment you think it is. It's like seeing someone with children and saying "wow your children are not misbehaving. You should consider being a babysitter. People would pay you for that.".
Sincerely, someone who was told yet again that I should monetize the hobby that I use to escape capitalism.
The holidays can be a really tough time. The advice I often heard was, "Volunteer at a soup kitchen. Help others. Get out of your head." It's perfectly fine advice, but unhelpful if the mere thought of interacting with people is overwhelming. Anyway, here's a thing I did one year that did help:
I bought a Cookie Monster costume, went to the airport, and waited at arrivals with a sign that said "COOKIE"
Didn't have to talk to anyone and boy did I get to watch people's faces light up.
dalek costume with a sign saying DOCTOR
The Cybertruck is no longer for sale?
What will I do if I ever want a car which looks like a metal doorstop?!
BTW: I am not insinuating that switching from AppKit to GPUI is a good engineering decision. I know nothing about GPUI, and a great deal about AppKit.
I assume it’s cargo culting because of Rust, which is itself a cult masquerading as a very decent programming language.

Seriously, someone Explain Like I'm A Sysadmin With 30 Years of Professional Computer Touching why a password is poor security, if the password:
- Is long
- Is generated by a password manager
- Is only used on one server
- That has a single job
- Which I will wipe and reinstall if it gets compromised
Every argument I've seen so far comes down to:
1. "If your server is already compromised, now they know your password." We can all see how by this point, a leaked password is not the problem, right?
2. "SSH keys are more convenient than copying and pasting passwords." Sure, they are, not that my question is about convenience, but the first thing I need to do on most servers I log into is `sudo -s` and now I'm back to passwords. (No, I do not give my unprivileged user blanket sudo-as-anything permissions.)
@futzle I don't know if this is a convincing argument or anything, but I do have a relevant anecdote.
The one time I've ever found malware on my computer was 15-20 years ago. The CPU was overactive, and I found a worm running as `guest` that was trying to break into other accounts (by guessing passwords).
Several years prior, I had created an account `guest` with password `guest` so that my roommate could use the computer if needed (don't recall exactly why). It was only much later, after having forgotten about this, that I had installed an ssh server.
That has stuck with me as an example of how two relatively innocuous actions can combine to cause a vulnerability.
@TheBreadmonkey we call these spindlers rather than spiders. They don't actually do a great deal apart from looming vaguely
I love a loomer
I am inexplicably terrified of spiders. Well, it's not really inexplicable. It's quite 'splicable - them terrifying beasties. However. I'm trying to be better with my spider pals. That being said - for some reason, the ones that have broken through the barrier are these little gents. I don't mind them at all. In fact I'm quite amiable towards them. These little fellows (whom for some reason I've gendered as male, despite clearly being female for some ineffable reason) are right up my straße and I'm quite content to have them in my world. Let us cohabitate, my little chums. Weird, eh?
