Mother Jones: Using AI to Plan Backcountry Trips Is Getting People Into Big Trouble (Nov. 1, 2026)
“I think they kind of turned their brains off.”
@ai6yr the same people who trust an LLM agent with their credit card.
National news tends to locate things in Texas to the county, for some reason. Particularly with elections, since they're administered by county governments. So, here's a Texas counties printer, in case you need it tomorrow:
Harris county (pop 5.1 mil) - home of Houston
Tarrant county (pop 2.6 mil) - home of Fort Worth
Dallas county (pop - 2.6 mil) - home of Dallas
Bexar county (pop 2.2 mil) - home of San Antonio
Travis county (pop 1.4 mil) - home of Austin
And to save you some math, that comes out to 13.9 million, of the 30.5 million in the whole state. So if something fucky is happening in these places, that represents 45% of the entire population of Texas.
Just fyi

I just learned that last month the UN voted on a new map projection that actually positions countries at the correct size. It passed almost unanimously with one country voting against it. Not surprisingly, it was the US.
@scottjenson well this does make Greenland waaaay smaller, which puts a wedge in the us' plans to acquire it

is #balatro all luck or am i just bad at it lol
@jonah It helps to choose a direction early. If you’re going with straight flush, choose only Neptune or Jupiter celestials, and try to favor a single suit.

@jalefkowit If ever this was appropriate . . .
I had forgotten how much I like the buddy comedy elements of Data and Picard sharing a Klingon cabin.
Old Spock is so much fun to watch it's kind of a shame he was wasted in the Generic Action Movie with Star Trek Branding.

Hadn't seem. RIP.
Well, made a post elsewhere. Don't think anyone follows me there, but hopefully serves at least as a bump.

I don’t think the mods there are going to let you.

Goodreads removed RSS and some people are asking for alternatives on Reddit; maybe worth pointing to BookWyrm and NeoDB?
Goodreads removed RSS and some people are asking for... #fediverse #goodreads #bookwyrm #neodb #rssfeeds
Both fediverse softwares that support user reviews for books, both have RSS support natively (no Piefed/Misskey bridge needed), and some comments also seem discontent with Amazon's mismanagement overall.
things i did that flirted with what youtube nudged me to want to produce always felt misguided in hindsight. maybe i have enough distance now to see the things i still appreciate and why, and use that to go in a more deliberate direction that resists the currents without burning me out.
