I figured out why I can't control my touchpad in #NetBSD.
The reason: It's an Elantech touchpad that is not recognized as Synaptics, which is the brand of touchpad that has all the levers in `sysctl`
And just as there is no `sysctl hw.synaptics`, there is also no `sysctl hw. elantech` available.
And as you can see in the man page, there are only two tweakable parameters for elantech, and I can't even access those.
@passthejoe Probably because it's one of the newer elantech revisions which the driver doesn't know about yet. I heard there's a dev with one, but we also need to keep the older code working...
I can see and feel that things are working, or nearly so. We're having an impact, people are responding.
Once we've navigated the next... Six months or so? Of uncertainty, we should be in the strongest position we've ever been in to face the future.
But part of getting there is getting a house sold, in the middle of a down market, with the highest interest rates of my adult life.
Several weeks ago our 12 year old Subaru Forester got backed into in a parking lot. Today it's getting fixed up at the body shop (omg insurance worked?!) so we have a rental and they gave us a 2027 Kia Carnival.
My car doesn't have any screens or smarts or anything. Basically the fanciest feature it has is cruise control. This 2027 has screens everywhere, backup camera, lane detection, built in maps, is a hybrid, and feels like driving the starship Enterprise in comparison.
@bigzaphod when we went from a 2010 Prius to a 2022 Bolt it was crazy how good the tech upgrade was.

@bigzaphod Yeah, I guess Subaru’s boxer engines tend to burn some oil over time (maybe due to the shape?)
Hyundai’s (and Kia’s) issue was with their 1.6L and 2.0L GDI engines used on a lot of vehicles where oil consumption would increase over time and eventually blow up the engine (they had recalls and a settlement.)
Oh, also thought I’d add that I appreciate the garage concern—I have a 100-year-old one-car garage that barely fits anything and fewer and fewer new cars would even work in there!

@cwebber Unfortunately there IS value in it - social cachet, perhaps, but that's still _worth something_, in the abstract. The category error is in imagining that that value is separable from the means of realizing it, which is The MBA Mythos writ tiny.

Chemistry lab required "closed-toe shoes". Stupid student wore dainty little shoes that covered her toes but not the tops of her feet, then argued with me over rules. Shrugged and let her have her way. Felt absolute glee two weeks later when she spilled strong alkali on her feet.
