@lisamelton I’ve followed your channel but I’m pretty rubbish at watching for notifications of when people are streaming.

I took time to watch the sunlight, and to feel the wind on my face.

Getting older is about letting go of things. It's also about holding other things tightly so you can remember their shape and their weight as and when they, too, are let go.

Paying attention to the world is always a good thing to do; some days it feels more splendid. Today is such a day.

@clive @TPM the scale is deceptive, with $133billion/month spent on construction in the US.

I deleted my Facebook account in 2017 because I saw what was coming and I didn't like it. I didn't "deactivate" it, I deleted it, according to all the "are you sure?" prompts I recall wading through to get the final message that if I don't log into it in the next 30 days, it's all gone forever.

This morning I woke up to a 2FA email request from Facebook, to the email address I last used with the service. It was a legitimate email from FB so I decided to see if my account was really just deactivated instead of fully deleted. Welp, guess what? I logged in with the password stored in my password manager, and it sent me a new 2FA code. I continued all the way in, and absolutely nothing was actually deleted. All of my friends from that era who still had Facebook accounts were in my friend list, my last post from the summer of 2017 was still there, and many more sent before that, along with photos that I recall individually deleting before closing the account just in case.

Facebook lied. Imagine that.

Of course I immediately went through the whole deletion process again, confirming I was sure at least seven times, and got the same "if you don't log in over the next 30 days all posts are deleted and unrecoverable". Gee, where have I heard that before?

I will try logging in around the first of December just to see what happens. As for that first 2FA request this morning, clearly someone has my FB login info. I know there was a breach a few years ago but I wasn't concerned back then since like a good tech person I only ever used that password on that site (which I confirmed with my password manager), and besides I had deleted my account right? ...Right. And I know that even if they really "delete" it this time and I can't get back in, they still have my data forever.

So the moral of the story (and we all know this already, don't we?) is that all corporations; all data holders and harvesters; all social media companies; all entities trusted with our personal and financial data, are lying to us. They are all defying the law, they are all disregarding their own data retention, privacy, and security policies, and they know they can get away with it so they do it with impunity. I'm in the US so there are virtually no laws protecting my rights. But even in the EU, the GDPR is not enough. Facebook/Meta was recently fined nearly a quarter of a billion Euros over "right to be deleted" legislation, and they brushed it off like the minor inconvenience it was.

@reay Oh yeah, redirecting is always hard, and so is aggressiveness. I’m glad you’re determined to be his forever home; we were Boxnoggin’s last chance and we’ve never been sorry, even if he takes a little more effort due to puppyhood-era issues.Well done—and omg, I would not be able to resist giving bellyrubs. Look at that!

A few weeks ago, we started noticing a number of applications on pixelfed.ca, where the user would say that they needed to register for a course. I don’t have full confirmation, but I’m fairly certain that this is a legitimate wave of signups from students at a Canadian university.

I’m sharing this post for a few reasons:

1. I thought it was neat

Personally, I’m excited that people are trying out Pixelfed and using it in coursework like this. If you are one of the students, now seeing this post, welcome! :) I hope that the project goes well, and that you have a pleasant experience on the platform. Feel free to share any and all feedback.

2. Some of the posts may look like spam at first

You might be seeing similar looking posts from different accounts on your feed. My guess is that the course has specific requirements and example templates. However, there’s also plenty of real content (ex. artwork, photography, etc.), so I don’t think it’s going to be disruptive

3. Please report anything that seems off

As always, you can report inappropriate content through the UI. For urgent issues, please email us at support@pixelfed.ca. You can also DM admin@lemmy.ca as there is overlap with our Pixelfed and Lemmy team members.

We have deployed fixes to the vast majority of vulnerable PHP servers in our managed customer estate. We have small numbers of remaining issues to work on this evening. The majority of our team have stood down.

We've more auditing scheduled for tomorrow to find any servers we missed, and we'll be catching up on all the non-emergency customer tickets we've postponed handling today.

Under Emily Lowan’s leadership, the BC Greens have undergone a radical brand refresh and the party has worked to engage a young audience. Will these efforts pay off at the voting booth? Hugh Chan writes. #BCPoli

@katharina_buholzer
I wrote a book about my problems with it.

This is a good day to mention that static site generators are awesome.
